I always amazes me the attitude of some people. Aswell as the E220 I also have a Type R and driving home tonight an S320cdi is in front of me, we come to a roundabout at the end of a duel carrigeway and go round together, he accelerates hard off the roundabout and so do I, for a big car it does shift however no real match for the civic (dare say top end might be different) i'm a good bit in front and look in my miorror to see him flashing his lights, then switches on his main beam etc! The guy will give himself a heartattack.

Why can people just accept there are faster cars out there!

Cheers,
C

Lol !!!

And yet i bet if he'd got in front of you, he'd be feeling all good inside!!

If they put their main beams on, just flick the rear view mirror down, turn on the rear fogs and keep 'em behind you !!

:) Exactly - I'm past the stage of getting stressed out about the "drive home"

My car craps all over my mates Civic Type R at any speed except for the initial takoff. I didn't think an S class would be that much difference but you never know. ;)

All depends on how these cars are driven, the Civic as standard is nearly a second quicker to 60 and handles like its on rails, if you catch the civic off the boil (not in vetec) then the torque in the cdi would kill it. But compare the power to weigt ratio of the two and you only get one result! :)

Totally different cars, so not really fair to compare the two - i enjoy the MB for the comfort etc and the civic for good B road blasts :)

First day I got my SLK I smoked a Typr R from lights, twice.

I agree that the magazine figures would show a Type R to be quicker 0-60 but it's a manual and who drives their car like the magazine testers. Mine being auto takes no skill or lack of mechanical sympathy, just boot it and it goes

Really pi**ed it's young driver off as I toasted him to about 40/50mph then let him past. Second time must have really annoyed him

For all the so-called benefits of the extra "control" you get with a manual it also means you have to actually get it right if you want to put that control to good use.

On the other hand with an automatic, you can out-drag other cars while messing with the headunit controls or reading a book at the same time. I'm sure nothing annoys the other driver more than being beaten by a boring old-man's car, the driver of which appears to be either asleep or just carrying out business as usual in a calm collected manner ;)

I enjoy driving both, the auto on the MB is excellent and the manual gearbox on the TypeR is a dream. I'm well used to the manual box, sounds as though the young driver above didnt know how to drive the car - there are many like him! :)

I do.

SLK will have much better CofG than Type R, probably lighter too and will be far better at putting the power down than the Type R even if it does have a little less power.

Have to disagree here, have driven both cars and if driven properly the TypeR will spank the SLK every time. Off the line on the wet the SLK will have an advantage but in the dry it wont live with a properly driven TypeR

Good morning Alfie,
My remarks do not relate to the cars.

Racing on public highways????

When pulling away from traffic lights we concentrate on the road, road users conditions etc. To actually 'race' 'smoke' 'outdrag' etc. other motor vehicles is not an activity encouraged by most Police Forces and to publically brag about it beggars believe!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for being more descriptive and no doubt I will reflect on this and perhaps amend my message.

Regards for now,
John

The power is about the same for the Civic Type R and the SLK, but the SLK weighs a lot more! The SLK weighs nearly as much as a w202 c-class, metal folding roof, roof mechanism and chassis strengthening bits are really heavy!

If u drive a nice car then really u have nothing to prove to anyone but I know sometimes that if someone really irritates u on the road then at times they need to be put in their place i.e. consistently cutting u up to provoke a reaction - thats why I prefer the debadge look (if u have a highly speced cars, big alloys/wheels and twin exhaust tehn no one will know what u have and will think twice...)

Thats the problem. all I've got to do is bury my foot on the accelerator and leave the car to do the rest, with the civic you have to get the gears spot on and if you do it is going to be quicker, trouble is most people can't seem to do this simple task of gear changing very efficiently.

Agree totally with what your saying Marcos, there are a lot of people who dont know how to drive properly and one thing you have to do well in a normall aspirated car is change gear properly. Take the typeR to 8250rpm in each gear and "horns appear" the noise is great! :)

Im sorry plodd but I agree. Apart from the 320 version, my MR2 roadster would turn a standard SLK into a dot in the rear view mirror every time, and that couldn't get close to a Type-R :(

The Gospel according to Mercedes clearly states that nothing will perform as well or look as good as a Mercedes, and i feel that Plodd should be cast out for admitting the heinious crime of speeding ............. and enjoying showing a pocket rocket what a real car can do (well done), E280's arent that slow from standing start ....... unless you dont notice the guy next to you is in a M5 BMW ......ooooops, cant win them all.

Was talking to someone I met when out with friends for drink one evening and he had a pre face lift W210 E280 and was saying how quick it was and from the lights left all The golft GTIs and other boy racers from a stand still.

I wish someone would race me!!! I bought a C36 AMG and to date no drags from the lights or anything. At least I don't think so, it could be that my car is just faster than everything else when I drive slowly....
