Sam's stupid ideas, part #1232: Audi A8 4.2

A8's and more so S8's have always been on my list of autotrader/eBay browses.

Always struck me a huge value for money, but I've always been drawn to the sport model.

Still, £3K..you can't really go wrong can you and just look how clean it is.

I've had a look around for Sport models, I do like the front seats etc... Cannot see any locally. I am drawn to this car especially because it's so straight. I've talked to the owner on the 'phone this evening and he's coming around to my way of thinking price-wise and is going to get it MoT'ed and serviced too.

I am a little concerned about the air-con. It wasn't blowing terribly cold when I checked and I suspect this is due to the 3-month layup. He is going to get it checked though, and I would buy on the proviso that it's working.

3 grand though... With a decent plate too. It's not a lot for 1.8tons of barge loveliness!

Only trouble is, having not owned a car for nearly a year, and living in the middle of Bristol, I'd successfully convinced myself that I don't need a car... And am now worrying I wouldn't use it enough!!

Ah but you wouldn't be using this forum unless you were a car fan!

Just because you've survived for nearly a year doesn't mean that you are cured of the affliction.

If you don't I might.

I used to have one of these, on a P plate (4-speed auto) - and I still miss it.

Keep us (me) informed. Just need to convince the Mrs that it won't cost more than the C240 to run.....(errr).

My wife ran one for a couple of years from 65k miles up to 100k miles. It gave no trouble and was light for it's size. The ride quality was not that good but otherwise it wafted very well. Then it was traded for....a Mercedes:D

Don't ask me for advice....I've got four cars in the drive and keep looking at others!!!!!

Superb car. Go for it. Drove mine to Poland in the Winter, it served as a wedding car for a friend, absolutely flawless in all ways except one - if you have three small children, three full sized car seats don't fit on the back seat (or in any saloon really, you need an estate - hence the E320cdi!).

if you don't need it and don't do many miles then it makes perfect sense :)

Much the same thinking applied when I bought the E55, the only trouble is that because it's so much fun to drive I'm doing a lot more miles than I used to.

These days, £3k isn't a great deal of money and that's an awful lot of car.

Have any of your neighbours got a spare parking space they don't use?

Nope, the parking situation around here is a right pig's ear. There is no on-street parking apart from a few spaces a couple of minutes walk away, and there is no parking in my block due to planning restrictions. There is a new residents' parking scheme coming in soon which may be a kill or cure situation!

I did rent a space for my last car but I can't bear to do it any more... Because I live in the centre of town near several major businesses it's eye-wateringly expensive to rent a 24/7 space! :(

This is meant to be a budget purchase ;)

parl it @ a mates place, your folks etc. If there is a will, there is a way ;)

Great choice of car, a friend of a friend had one and my mate went out in it and said it could hit 120mph in 3rd gear and you were aware of a slight jolt as it went from 3rd into 4th @ 120mph.

They don't make 'em like they used to and if its a clean straight car go for it. £3k is all you have to lose

How are you for parking at work? Would leaving it there be a problem?

Parking at work's fine- Loads of space. It's only about a 5-7min cycle ride away, but it would kind of defeat the object :p (But might be good to deter over-use of thirsty V8!!

Plus parking where YOU work is likely to be secure.......

Go on Sam, you know you are only seeking confirmation! lol

Yep, I know

Finance more-or-less secured, trying to get hold of the seller now... Despite the fact it's been for sale since January and I spoke to him yesterday I'm bricking it that someone else has snapped it up whilst I've been deliberating

If it's any of you lot, I WILL know and I WILL hunt you down mercilessly :D;)

You'd hope so... However within the first couple of months the complex was open a couple of scallies managed to stroll past the "security" gates and nick a couple of bikes in the middle of the day

There has also been a paint attack from the flyover above... But apart from that it's secure :)

Enjoy it - they are great cars !
