I think the S-type has 2.5 or 3.0 petrol, a diesel (mebbe 2.7?) and as mentioned above the stonker of the type R, which I have driven. Very nice indeed.
2.5 V6 entry level
2.7 Twin Turbo Diesel (Clarkson took one of these around the ring)
3.0 V6
4.0 V8
4.2 V8
Your all right.... The S Type Jag is a very heavy car, and despite its 240bhp in the 3.0 its not a rocket but its also not sluggish either for the size of car....
I changed as I do lots of miles and the Jag I find personally far more comfortable than my C240 Sport. Although I did love my Benz and will get another...
Sorry mate but when Chrysler and Daimler got together Mercedes gave Chrysler the quality info. When Ford bought Jaguar unfortunately, Ford foisted their quality on Jaguar!
I was going to say that given the build quality of some recent Mercedes they should ask for it back, but then I remenbered about the "wonderful" Chrysler Neon.
IMHO the build quality of Jaguars has improved dramatically under Ford. I'm not sure if the merger with Chrysler has done a great deal for Mercedes.....

Morning Robin,
I totally agree with your post and I wonder if the Chrysler merger influenced the decision on where to build the original ML? The quality of these first ML's has been well documented and it certainly did not enhance the reputation of the Mercedes-Benz brand.
Hi I'm a newbie around here and currentlu drive an S'Type (3.0 litre sport) which is about to go back (end of 3 years) to be replaced by an E320CDi. Can not wait.
The Stype starts with a 2.5 litre petrol and then the 3.0 litre sport for those for whom petrol prices are of no importance there is also a 4.2 litre and a 4.2 litre supercharged.
Mine is a 2001 which I have had from new. Build quality is reasonable apart from som eof the plastics on the inside being a bit on the cheap side and som eof the shut lines being large enough to loose your first born in. Now theres a thought .....

Yes I did test drive the E320CDi. Got one from a day from local merc dealer. It is much better than the Jag in terms of in gear performance and a much nicer place to be in terms of the interior.
As I said my Jag is a 2001 model and has the 5 speed auto - which is rubbish. The Merc box was light years better. The newer Jags have a 6 speed auto which I believe is much better.
Overall the Merc was a nicer drive, had better performance, better fuel economy, looks better (to my eyes) and hold its value MILES better.
The Merc was a bit pricey - with toys mine came in at just over the £40K mark. But it was a no contest. I did consider - briefly - a 5 series, but I just could not live with those looks .

Hopefully I never criticised the 530d engine, it is a good engine and hopefully you will accept the 535d also a 3.0 litre engine is even better. My 'full stop' remark is just supporting the other remarks made by Martin about the looks.
