Hi I recently purchased a 97 slk 230 r170 for my girlfriend. The infra red single button key fob only worked against the windscreen next to the receiver.
Last week my girlfriend got stuck at work as the key fob stopped working . She opened the car with the key itself and it started no alarm or imobiliser ?? . Thinking the alarm which was a scorpion Mercedes retrofit item was faulty I took the car to an alarm specialist to have a new one fitted. They rang to say they couldn't fit an alarm that would operate the central locking because of the vacuum system so they had removed the scorpion alarm system which was not working at all and fitted a touch key imobiliser instead.
Now by coincidence the Mercedes fob won't operate the central locking at all !! So the key only opens and closes the drivers door. Petrol cap open and boot. The switch on the dash opens and closes everything as it should so it's not the vac pump . I had the key tested and it works and the star machine came up with error B1021 and Mercedes tech have told me it's the passenger door solenoid / lock can anyone help as I can't see a lock that's working off the dash switch being faulty ????
Any help would be brilliant sorry for the long winded message

Hi ,
Try resetting the key fob with these instructions :-

ok here's the instructions. The time's are inportant.

To Syncronise the Remote Control key
Aim end of the Remote Control key with "Light" at car, Press the lock or unlock button on the Remote Control key twice and within 30 seconds place key in steering lock and turm to position 2.
Vehicle and the Remote Control key should now be Syncronised.

This is what i did when i purchased my new key from MB factory and it is what the spare parts dept told me to do and it worked fine.

Hope this helps.

What does this procedure achieve exactly?

The reason I ask is that my key fob will open the car, but it seems to be getting increasingly difficult to do so. I'm not quite sure what the problem is, as the batteries are ok, as far as I know (IR blaster tested with smartphone camera).

Do you think this procedure would help make opening/closing the doors easier?

I think that applies to a flip out key, if it is without power for more than a minute, when changing the batteries, then it needs to be synchronised.

Ah. I don't have the flip out key, just the usual push button IR remote to open/close the doors.

But I did take the batteries out once, so perhaps I need to do some kind of reset? I will check the manual...

Thanks for the instructions I have tried synching the key with no luck but I appreciate the help

The switch on the dash locks and locks the doors/fuel flap and boot.
The one button flip out remote locks and unlocks the driver’s door fuel filer flap and boot but fails to lock or unlock the passenger door.

Is the above correct?

Is there a Red window in the end of the remote fob like in the video below?

Dec the remote doesn't do anything lock or unlock anything. She has to use the flick out key to open the drivers door. The dash switch locks and unlocks everything
Cheers

Then you have to first test the remote control and change the batteries… if you haven’t already done so.

Hi ,
On the SLK R170 the first press of the key only opens the drivers side and fuel tank.

The boot and passenger door is kept locked.

Press the key twice again and it opens the boot and the passenger door.

please help my slk 200 central locking stopped working the indicators flash when fob is pressed but no locks work and central locking only works on dash switch. I have tried new batteries in fob and syncing to the car, as indicators flash i guess the fob signal is being received. Any ideas anyone

Check for damp in the pse pump.
You will find it encased in foam behind the jack in the spare wheel well.

My SLK 230, year 2000, will open with remote but not usually with the remote. Have changed batteries in the remote and reset. I have to lock each part of the car manually. Whats' my problem please?

Is the unlock button on the remote reliable?
Is the central locking switch inside the car reliable if used to lock or unlock?

This whole thing seems to change with the facelifts - I have a 2000 W facelift R170 320 and I have two keys. both of which work. One unlocks the two doors and the boot, the other just the drivers door.
I am told that I can programme the keys to make them both the same but can't find a way to do this.
