Slow charger

Got a maintenance charger from my local Lidl for £12.99 a few months ago

The unit seems is well built and manufactured in Germany by http://www.kompernass.com/pages/index.php?lang=en and has full TUV accreditations which is reassuring.

The manual is written in perfect English and the device seems to be fully automatic other than having to select 12v or 6V, car or motorcycle. Charging/recovery and maintenance modes to keep your battery fully changed automatically according to the state of the battery.

My Ctek came with a cable/plug to connect directly to the battery terminals.

Yes, they all do, but my battery is under the floor of the boot. Easier for me to connect to the points under the bonnet with the croc clips(which is also recommended in the handbook). I would have bought the cigarette lighter connection, but mine is not live without ignition on.

Don't know if it is a viable alternative, but the Draper model I have is designed to do same thing can't say which as I'm away from car !

Probably OK, but I gather the danger is voltage spikes, and CTEK specifically says that the dangerous back ripple of current is very low.

I was hoping to do that, but they haven't been on offer for ages...!

Also got one months ago for normal/ overnight charging and well satisfied with it. One little thing is the screw terminal posts on the croc clips can become unscrewed easily and lost - got the tee shirt etc !

On the subject of maintenance charging, do you guys just connect the crocodile clips to the battery with the battery still in situ? I am thinking of buying a Halfords maintenance charger or the Aldi version (when they come on offer) and want to simply connect to the charging points under the bonnet. Bit confused because the handbook says its OK with some chargers, but Halfords say you shouldn't do it...Can anyone offer an opinion...?

Yes I do : both my Ponton and my 280SE are on permanent maintenance charge with the Aldi chargers and always ready to start at a moment's notice .

These are exactly the same as the Aldi ones ( Aldi brand them as 'AUTO XS' ) , I have three of them , two permanently on seldom used cars , plus a spare .

I find they do an excellent job - will fully charge a dead battery in about a day , or keep a good one properly maintained .
