Sold a laptop on ebay, buyer now claims fault & wants refund

if feedback has been left, then tell him to f off and stop wasting your time

As a retailer of 2nd hand goods for over 20 years I have found that with some punters there can be no pleasing them. Was the item fit for the purpose --- yes because it works fine-- its only overheating after a couple of hours use, which has previously been discussed,as a possible ventilation issue, perhaps he is laying on his bed with it. At the end of the day its £150 lappie, not a brand new item and for £150 he has got his moneys worth. If he really doesnt like it -- then he can put it back onto Ebay and might even make a profit on it. If you really feel inclined --then let him return to you at his cost for investigation of the overheating---- but a s soon a s you take it back and try to return it --- he will probably say that it has been lost in the post, just to try to get his money back. I would not entertain any form of refund for this item.

Thanks all for all the excellent advice.

Just to let you know what happened...

I suggested two options:

1. That he could choose a Toshiba authorised repairer from their website (with prior agreement with myself), return the laptop to me, we get it inspected as agreed with him paying their charges. If & only if they found the fault he described I would refund him in full.

2. As a gesture of goodwill I offered £20, which (not surprisingly with hindsight!) he took.

Maybe I won't be so nice next time?

Are you selling anything else on e-bay soon???? Can't wait to get my £20 discount!!!

i would have just ignored his emails - wost he can do is submit paypal claim if its inside the 60 day limit, he needs to send it recorded for that to work out for him.

Well I am pleased that the matter is resolved, albeit at a loss of £20 to you. With hindsight I didnt take on board that you had been paid by Paypal, as they seem to be very " refund happy" when it comes to "customer complaints".
I suppose the old adage of "Alls well that ends well" is applicable in this case.
