Someone just hit my car!

Many a time I wished I'd been driving a battered old Land Rover, bull bars, who needs 'em?

I would love to invent a system whereby anyone or anything that gets to within a few inches of your car, a load mega-phone blasts out words to the effect of 'get away from my car you silly person [or words to that effect]. You could have a choice of words to insert:p or 'smacka my car - I smacka your face:p
I had a Clifford alarm on my SW20 MR2* some years ago that had a similar feature. I think they were called proxy sensors?

If something moved within a few inches of the car, it chirped. If it happened three times in succession within a certain timeframe it blasted the alarm.

Was a great system, as I knew if I couldn't hear it then there was nobody near it!!

* Off topic ... I wanted a green MR2 since 1985 when a sexy young thing up the road had the first MR2 I had ever seen, in Green/Wheat two-tone. I also wanted a Clifford alarm since I first read about them. So when I finally bought a Goodwood Green MR2, I had to have the alarm as the cherry on the top!!

I have a Clifford Concept 600 alarm on my BMW. It is great but geez is it sensitive - you only have to look at it and it bleeps. A leaf falls on it and it goes off on one:crazy: The funniest feature, I think, is the 1000 watt strobing blue light on the front windscreen. I want my car to be inconspicuous - instead the light shouts 'I'M OVER HERE' !!!!!

When I had the car first of all I could not even into the blessed thing without the alarm going off. It took me hours of research but I finally managed to get the instruction book off the internet. I got as far as page 1 which allows me to now at least put the damn thing into 'valet mode' so I can work on her - or even wash her come to that!! The other 15 pages of what it can do can wait. Might make it bedtime reading for the winter. Apparently it anti-jack mode, personal attack alarm etc etc. You need a degree in technology just to understand the buttons on the key fob!

I have a specially printed instruction page that I keep in the car for when she goes into the garage, MOT, tyres changes just so they car work on her:D

The alarm is very clever - it tells you with the sequence of flashing lights if the alarm has been activated whilst you have been away. I should have taken more notice of this when the idiot in the 4x4 backed into my car and chipped the bonnet:mad:

The vibration sensor is adjustable usually with a screwdriver. It's set too fine.

Where can I locate that Buddy:confused:. Something needs to be done. My son takes great delight in setting her off every morning with his 328i BMW with his Mongoose exhaust whilst he is pulling out of the drive to go to work and also when he comes home. See what I have to put up with Guys 'n Gals....

That's one thing I miss about my Beemer- Even the slow ones sound bloody brilliant! Great exhaust note. (Mine was slow not yours...)

Yes it is - you can hear him coming for miles. The reason why he had this fitted is because he increased the air coming in via induction and so needed to get it out the other end!!

It is definitely not a case here of 'All Talk and No Torque'. It is pushing 225bhp now.

Is that a qualified figure?
I just ask as an induction kit and trick exhaust won't make that much difference without other mods.

Not very considerate to other people though. I live in Central London and frankly am fed up with all these people in their ludicrously loud cars or bikes (have the impression bikes are amongst the worst offenders). Normal traffic you don't even hear inside, not even the buses, but others are so loud you can't even hear yourself talking over it.

Time we had some legislation to restrict this type of noise.

We do, it's just not enforced properly.

Thanks - didn't know that. Is it verified when going for an MOT?

There is no actual sound reading taken, it's the testers discretion as to whether it's too loud or not.
Also there is no requirement to rev a petrol car or even start a motorbike so they escape that way.

There is also legislation regarding persistant alarms going off, but once again it is all about enforcement..

It may be worth a call to a local Clifford installer - it's a very quick job and a little trial and error. When I had mine fitted, they said to stop by any time I wanted to tweak the sensitivity.

Probably the sort of thing they'll do for good will - or maybe worth a fiver for them to grab a round of drinks, as then you'll be able to go back without feeling bad if you need it tweaking again. ;)

.......

You are absolutely correct, of course. However, he has several mods to his car - as do I. These enhance the smooth delivery and performance thus giving us, for one, optimum fuel efficiency which is so important. Also, don't think his exhaust is a 'trick' exhaust' as you call it. It is a custom Mongoose stainless steel system and was only put on as his engine is artificially restricted at the factory and he wanted to get the best out of his pride and joy! My son is by no means a boy racer. For the record his 226bhp has been vertified on a rolling road.... sufficient?

He has worked with some of the best racing mechanics [F1] in the world and so would NEVER add anything for no reason.

Hope that answers your post

Oh how some people can take a joke comment too literally and seriously:mad: As I said in an earlier post my son is not a boy racer. He treats his car with respect. No respect = huge garage bills. Yes, I agree the exhaust is slightly more 'throaty' than a normal exhaust and the thing with my alarm was a little bit of fun:D. In normal driving conditions this exhaust is only a few decibels higher than a normal exhaust - which I might add would make a noise if revved too high!

You live in London I read. I am sure that ludicrously loud cars and bikes are only part of the horrendous noise pollution that exists there, as in other big cities. Perhaps you should move to the countryside - Oh that wont be much better because they have combine harvesters working all through the night during the harvesting season & huge gas guzzling 4 x 4's [where they belong I might add - not just Chelsea Tractors].

So sorry to have upset your day:p

At the wheels, or at the flywheel? I merely ask as the fly reading is subject to "correction", which the dyno operator can (if they so wish) mess around with to make it read what he likes...at the wheels is a much fairer guide of what the car is producing.

Hmm...that didn't answer my question, but never mind. I'll have to assume its at the flywheel then.

My point was that an awful lot more work must have been done that just an induction kit and freeflow, loud exhaust. Was this a complete exhaust right from the cylinder head or just the pipes under the car?
If it's just under the car it can't make that much difference, agreed the original exhaust is restrictive to reduce noise but not that restrictive.

Please tell us what else has been done..
