Speed limits may rise

Keeping 70 on motorways though!

I've lost track of the number of fast dual carriageways round here that have gone from unrestricted to a 50 limit in the last few years . The roads leading to/from the M25 J11 roundabout are a great example. No side turnings, houses, schools, anything like that ... yet suddenly they are a 50 limit (and yes they periodically have a guy with a laser gun there). The single carriageway road that then goes into Weybridge .. past loads of houses, side roads, pedstrian crossing, etc. is also a 50 limit!

surprised they are keeping 70. I thought it would be an opportunity for them to say 80 but plaster the Mways with cameras?

70 and no cameras please.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

ACPO (aka Top Cops Club) have been advocating a Motorway Limit of 80mph for some time...

I hope that will stop local authorities putting nonsense lower limits on A roads and dual carriageways because of some local whim or, local politics or even lower motives.

One example is a perfectly safe A road running through open country that went from being a 60 national limit to a 40 limit for about 6 miles on the back of one fatal accident and a number of shunts at a particularly unpleasant road junction people had been complaining about for years.

That junction, after years of procrastination & delay by the County Council(on grounds of cost versus safety gains!!) now has traffic lights but the blanket 40 limit stays on grounds of "safety" because the Liberal Democrats in the Local Council thought it would be a vote catcher and made a big fuss.

The local Scamera Partnership mobile units do still seem very worried about that stretch of road. Why, they just cannot stay away.

More than 2m drivers received speeding fines last year compared with 260,000 in 1996

 Thats £120 million in revenue, and for what? A marginal increase in road KSIs - it's sickening.

Were any of you guys on the M1 over the weekend? It looked as if the Police were having a blitz, still need to fill the coffers up, it's nearly time for the ACPO Christmas Party.

ok ok ok hows about a fifth lane just for merc drivers and no limit???? :bannana:

What was the method? Unmarked cars? Vans on bridges? Vascar? Jam sandwiches? Road Works cameras?

A mixture, further North around Bradford/Leeds there were a couple of "Safety Vans", then at Nottingham, Leicester, and Northampton there were marked cars working in pairs on both carriageways.
I guess there were unmarked mixed in with the traffic too, though didn't see anyone pulled.

A really obvious prescence. Not sure what was up...

okeydokes - should see that lot well in advance - thanks
