Yes I don't really blame the Ipswich police - the sergeant there was quite helpful, it was just that he was away on leave for a long time and communication between officers seemed non-existent.

As for the equipment, that's a very good idea that you mentioned. Would you say that I should explain the whole story or just say that I 'found' it?

Hi Jon,
If you were to go down this avenue then honesty will be the best policy, this hi-fi equipment might be stolen and you would need to know this.

The way I see it, this will be a win, win situation. If it is stolen then this 'gentleman' will have some explaining to do, as he has already admitted he owns it. If it is not stolen, and not claimed, then it will legitimately be yours.

Lots of folks will have other excellent advice that may well be worth listening to, but please do not do anything unlawful.
