Strange post but.....tell me why I shouldn't buy a C63

Having owned an E46 an E92 and now a C63, I will say this.

I should have kept my E46. It was a full spec low mileage FSH example in carbon black with ACS3 suspension, exhaust, intake and map.
It would have been my weekend toy.

I wouldn't buy another E92, they are very nice to look at and incredible to drive hard but I just never gelled with mine. V8 too muted, needed high revs for any performance, seating position too high, and somehow it never felt special.

I must admit there was a gap of 3 years before I got the C63 and apart from the narrow rear end and tyres I love it.

It's not hooligan, but that start-up noise is lovely (E46 cold start? but with bite and intention).
You can drive it around like an every day C class and wonder why those in the know are looking.
If you want some noise and performance without breaking the law you can have it in Sport and enjoy the pops and higher rev gear changes, but if you really want to rag it then you can have it in Sport+ or manual.
The HK sound is decent, the satnav is quite good.
The squeaks and rattles are similar to what you would have experienced with the E46 (except on a younger car).
Steering feel is probably on a par with the E92 but it seems to be very sensitive to suspension set up, air pressure etc. (19" wheels).
Mine has the LSD which does the E46 type 'grinding' when cold but is excellent when 'driving with the rear'.
It does feel heavy and especially will for you coming out of an E46.

I had the use of a Porsche 911 C4s 991 (current model) after I had already bought the C63 and that is a total licence losing hooligan.
It is the slightly grown up brother of the E46 if you are looking for something similar.
It looks beautiful, but is not as fast as you would think, it handles fantastically and the driving position is spot on.

But it is too noisy and uncomfortable for every day use.

I would love to have one,---but not instead of my C63.

There is no other car I would like to have as a daily driver at this moment than my C63 and when I get tired of mine I will park it and keep it for occasional use.

I went straight from E92 to C63 - had both cars for 6 weeks at the same time - I prefer the C63 and agree with your E92 points - lovely car but I found it to be too refined and like you said you only got a great noise at high revs which was hard to do on the daily commute (safely). The E92 felt lighter and more nimble than the C63 but for 95% of the day to day drive, the noise, torque and looks of the C63 did it for me.

oh...and I agree about the E46 - thats why I still have one - what a car :)

For what it's worth, I'm nearly 6 months into ownership of my C63 saloon.
It's easily the best car i've ever owned (C43 and RX-7 are 2 and 3 on the list)

Yes the gearbox is a little dim-witted (but in sport or sport+ you're never wanting for response)
yes the servicing is pricey,
yes it's a bit firm in the ride dept and it creaks a bit
and it's thirsty (I'm averaging 16.5mpg)

but it makes me smile every time I;
start it
listen to it
gas it (not as often as you'd think)
look at it
watch the speedo spin like it's broken
listen to it (yes I've said that before but come on!)
feel the torque
take it through some twisties - the steering is just lovely
get out of it

Perhaps I'm not the best qualified to help in this scenario as I'm clearly biased.
I've had a go in an E92 M3 and while I agree it feels lighter on it's feet and it does scream nicely at the top revs, I'm happy I've made the right choice.

The C63 just feels more special more of the time.

All of these cars are great cars and its down to personal opinion etc for me the c63 suits me But just enjoy them as the days of NA engines are pretty much done im not a fan of the new turbo v8s when you hear the turbo kicks in not doing it for me and if noise is important to you the c63 is up there for me its the no1 reason I would keep one the rest I would live with I know the m3 is rated higher etc but I do like the underdog with the loud bark

Already posted on the other V8 thread if you search my posts. Went for a V8 as it's bombproof and I can maintain it myself

Ahh cool, I'll have a look later.

I did consider the V10 Spyder when I was swapping my C4S but ended up going for another Porsche, 991 GTS as it drove better to me.

Cheers much to like then - particularly the sound!

Cheers Bron - the fact we'll probably not see an engine like this again appeals to me and I've had a steady diet of BMWs over the last few years so fancy a change.

As an aside, a friend of mine went from an E92 to a C63.
When I spoke to him about the C63 (with much envy) shortly after he got it, he thought he preferred the BMW.
He has recently replaced the C63..............with an E63.
I guess he was converted by the AMG bug;)

Yes I vouch for that I think the bmw is the better car no doubt has been for the last 3 or more decades but this w204 c63 is close enough and does make you feel special the noise more than anything I love both cars and would love to keep both going to see a competition pack m3 this weekend like I said these are special cars different animals but both are fantastic and will probably never be seen again I mean even F1 no longer have v12s and v8s its a japanese ish turbo world now enjoy them whilst you have them but yes there is an amg bug and yes its great

I'm only 4 months into ownership, but I agree with all of that, with the exception of the servicing.
I had my B service done very recently by a local Mercedes specialist. it was £180 in total. I suspect the MB dealership would have been a hell of a lot more.

It makes me smile every time I start it from cold and the noises it makes popping and banging make me grin like a school kid.

Well when I think of turbos a hell of a lot of japanese cars come to mind and not one single us car so hence my reference to it being japanese ish but yes on technicality you are correct it was indeed GM in 1962/63 I believe but it was the japanese that made it popular

My B2 service was £900 and change. The car is still under warranty so its a no brainer to continue servicing at MB dealers. Thinking I shoulda gotten a service plan now!

Was that gearbox oil service too?

£900?! WTF! What was carried out for £900?

My last B service at a main dealer was £320 last May and the A service was £280 this May.

I was warned that next years includes the gearbox oil change - an additional £180 I think the dealer said.

Although I may well go for the TCU upgrade at the same time to kill two birds with one stone.

I guess when it comes down to it neither car is poor, it's just what stirs your emotion. Cars apart my only contrast is that my local BMW dealer are far friendlier and easy to get on with than the local Mercedes Benz one. On the countdown now - collect this Friday. :bannana:
