Population is not what defines a city.....St Davids, Pembrokeshire, Wales is a city....less that 2000 people.
But then does it have as good a golf course as Royal St David’s too?

A city does not need to have a Cathedral to be classified as a city these days.....many don't even in the UK.....Bath, Cambridge, Leeds and Wolverhampton for example.
 
Thinking of getting a plug in hybrid. Question is for those more knowledgeable than myself on all things leccy. Is it fine charge from the 3 pin plug or splash out on a wall charger. Car will not be doing many miles, so time to charge is not a big concern. Real world advice appreciated, good:) & bad points:mad:. Thanks

So with a full ev a ‘Granny’ or domestic 3 pin 240v ac charge unit is ok if do little use of the car that freeing up 24hr+ to recharge is never going to be an issue; tbh that is unlikely as time will come when you need the car/range and the granny charger won’t cut it. You could tho just pop out to an ultra rapid charger for a boost to full charge.

As your car will be a hybrid there is nothing to worry about as your main fuel source is petrol and the Granny charger will be more than enough. Note that more and more cars only come with a full ccs charge cable so you might have to buy the Granny separate. Avoid the Dealers and buy from an independent- higher quality cable and lower cost in my experience. hth

You absolutely do not need a vaguely rapid walk charger.

A wall charger is fine. And, I would humbly suggest just setting it to slowly charge.

The experts say that most first owners nd er even bother to charge at all. It’s a thing. But a gentle charge isn’t difficult. You just plug it in

I have happily toured the States and Europe in a rented EV just using a granny charger to add a lot of miles in the 18 hours that the wretched thing is parked up overnight. (Charging from Airbnb rentals for free)

Do the maths. Any car spends most of its time just parked,

Generally a PHEV has a smaller battery - typically about 15kWh to 18kWh - though there are larger ones - MB will kindly sort you out with a 31kWh in the current GLC.

Charge rate off a 3 pin is typically 10A - so 2.3kW. So around 7 to 8 hours for a 15kWh battery - from empty.

For many PHEV owners this will be practical for overnight - and they may well be only topping up a partially discharged battery. If you have a current GLC 300e or 300de and discharging the battery regularly and needing a full charge overnight then the 3 pin option may be less attractive at say 14 hours if you need to do that regularly rather than just a top up.

A 7kWh wall charger will triple that rate.

The wall charger may also have the advantage of being able to manage charging when matched with a low cost EV electricity tariff.
 
Thanks for the comments folk's. Another probably basic question, should I plug it in every day, no matter what the level is (obviously not if its 100%) or wait until its depleted to ???%
 
So a week to go til delivery.

Car 150 mile range.

Daily commute 35 miles all in, 6 days a week

Car sits mostly on driveway for 12 hours when I get back

Free chargers at work but hit n miss whether working or whether one is available.

Granny charger 200 quid or wall box 800 quid plus (car comes with type 2 charger lead for wall box)

Should I pay the 800 quid or just make do with the granny ?
 
With a good EV wall box tariff (my neighbour pays 7p per kwh to charge his car) its not going to take long to recoup the expense. Plus you have the convenience of fast charging when you need it.

Looks like your use pattern means you can go with the latter.

Nothing to stop you putting in a wall box later. If you can get a cheaper tariff based on overnight use then you can look at setting up a timer to control three pin charging.
 
Well I've just had a fitter round for a quote so see what he comes back with.

I will probably just buy the Screwfix Granny cable and see how it goes for the time being.

We had no end of trouble with the electric company when we had a smart meter (overhead electric cable supply) so now dumped the smart meter and just pay a boggo flat rate.
 
Some will argue that a wall box is just modernising your house, so you should write off the cost over 20+ years…

Others will argue that a granny cable is always useful when you’re away from home, visiting relatives, rentals or whatever

Others will argue that they just “have to have” the fastest charging speed.

Others will say if you can charge two or three times a week at work, you won’t have to top up your EV at night… at all.

With my deep pockets and short arms, I’d be trying to get your EV charged at work and use then just top up at the local supermarket if you can’t.

There’s no urgency, really.

Are EV's being sold with no means of charging at all, not even a granny cable ?

That can't be right.
Mine both came with a granny cable & type 2 cable.
