The EV fact thread

Which personal information would a car manufacturer hold about me with an EV which they wouldn’t hold with an ICE of similar age?

I’m not sure there’s much because the ability to capture and transmit data is all about connectivity and not at all about drivetrain.

I have modern cars and an EV, and I struggle to see which information would be available beyond locations, routes, consumption and speeds.

Car manufacturers already have personally identifiable information including credit card number home address.

What am I missing?
It’s just scaremongering.

I’m not blaming the member here who brought it up, it’s the kind of crap that’s being spread across the internet by people who are anti something or another. It’s a perfect subject for this, China the bogey man spices things up considerably.

China. Is really, really good at making videos of products which show them to be revolutionary and incredible....

After 4 years with the IONIQ 5, I am in the market for my next EV. The default option is another IONIQ 5, but I thought I'd look around anyway.

Mrs MJ is keen on a mid-size SUV, and while the IONIQ 5 is a big car, the sloping rear hatch does limit its load-carrying capability (I.e., not IKEA friendly....).

I was blown away by some of the YouTube reviews of Chines EVs, but sadly the Chinese marques currently selling in the UK - BYD, Zeeker, MG, Polestar - do not sell their SUVs over here for some reason (I guess these are for the American market).

Hyundai do not sell SUVs here either... the IONIQ 7 is not available here.

Hyundai's sister company, Kia, does sell the EV9 here, but it's too big. The EV5 is perfect in terms of size, but it's not out yet.

I had a closer look at the EQB, which, size-wise, is also a perfect match - but the tech is disappointing, to say the least, compared to the Chinese and Korean EVs - no point in buying a 2025 car that can't match the tech my 2021 EV....

The odd one out is the VW ID. BUZZ, which is so good looking to a point where I might be willing to overlook the tech.....

The search continues.

I’ve seen a few Jaecoo SUVs around here, should be big enough. Cheap(ish) too.

Great looking cars, but the UK website only shows petrol and hybrid models, no pure-EV?

This fits the bill nicely, in terms of size and shape:

But sadly it's using yesterday's tech.... :(

My son with 3 kids has an ID Buzz and it's definitely IKEA friendly. With the seats up even the short wheel base version has over 1000 liters of boot space. I can't imagine there are many alternatives that will compete with that short of a Transit van.

My i3 = 1100

But it works and will continue to work.
BTW it's the most recent tech for Toyota/Lexus and we know they don't leap in.
Have you checked out the Lexus+ safety tech?

But it works and will continue to work....

My 2021 IONIQ 5 charges at 220kW, which was a blessing when travelling to Switzerland through France.

The 2025 EQB charges at 100kW, and has a battery that has 15% less capacity.... and that's in a car that's 4 years newer and cost £10,000 more (when comparing the top spec models). No thank you.

MB really need to up their game if they want to stand a chance in the face of Far Eastern competition.

Even at the top of the Austrian alps, we are so behind..

OK, taped off for repainting but a charging point for EVs @3500m ...

How very true. I had absolutely no issues whatsoever with charging in France and Switzerland, including overnight charging at hotels along the route.

But why should we be developing our own Alps, like Austria ?

Understand the rhetoric, but the evidence for insufficient chargers is weak, to say the least. The only folks that seem to struggle in the "current" climate are people with early EV's trying to use them for regular long distance work.

1700 litre capacity any use to you? ID7 Tourer

Only an extra 100 or so litres, but the length might be useful.

500 litres less than the ID Buzz, for sure, but not as cavernous.

Anyone interested in buying a LHD Red Tesla S ?

There's a reality TV fella in the States looking to sell his. Low mileage. One, not very careful owner.

Not sure about future value, though... Somehow, Donald Trump's Tesla just doesn't sound as exciting as Elvis Presley's Cadillac...

Looks good.

However... while 175kW charging speed for the single motor car and 200kW for the dual motor variant is not as abysmal as MB's 100kW, and certainly good enough for any pan-Continental journey, it is still disappointing that I'll need to settle for slower charging than what my 4 years old car can do now. You'd have thought that the tech would go forward, not backwards.
