The missing RHD AMG Hammer????

Hi Talbir
Was your very nice vehicle registered to the individual and do you have this documentation? I expect the answer is yes and as stated I am merely curious as to its history and very envious of your owning this very nice car.

I am

Hi

Yep, it's in the file - both V5 copies with Jeff Lyne and George Harrison as recorded owners are on file.

VLAD's first post also mentions the DVLA search confirming this.

For me the previous owners have no bearing whatsoever - i only care about the car and it's AMG pieces. But definitely a nice bit of nostalgia !
:)

Talbir,

It being Coys who were auctioning the car I've got to say I don't think it wildly unreasonable to assume the worst about ANY car they're handling, what with a fairly dodgy reputation & a long history of lawsuits behind them. I used to work for a competitor of theirs at the very high end of the classic car trade in S. Ken & can tell you stories that would make your hair stand up straight.

Fortunately for you, in this case those fears appear to be unfounded & the car looks like a good one, especially as you have the talent, skill & connections to restore it at a fraction of the cost your average punter would be paying.

Good luck with your project.

totally agree - which is why i never base my decision to buy a car on picstures or anything the Vendor says...i had read lot about the car from it's 80s test reports, AMG literature and through friends who know more about AMG than me....that way i would only have myself to blame if things went pear-shaped.

cheers buddy

I am looking forward to seeing pictures and I am hoping you will keep us all updated regarding the progress of the restoration. Have you made your mind up regarding the sun roof?

Please do not think I am having a go at you. Just the opposite.

Good luck with the restoration.

Yours sincerely
John

cheers John

I have yet to inspect the sunroof closely - i know that MB had glass roofs as options on the w124 and w126 and these are shown on the EPCs. My first impressions are the sunroof is aftermarket - but i don't think the hole would have been cut in the roof ! It was a 230E in it's first life, and most w124 MBs did come with sunroofs...my guess is that the original roof panel was removed and a glass panel installed in place. But let me take a closer look at the sunroof and confirm the issues. Not at the top of the list of my priorities but it'd be nice to confirm :-)

Yawn ....

Ok, perhaps you think you don't come across as an aggressive person .... fair enough.

Now you are nitpicking , ok you did actually type the word 'hello' but then launched straight into it ....

Glad you like your cars , i'll bow out now , can't be bothered.

H

I launched into a defence of the car and myself with some objective facts. I did not realise this would be seen as aggresive.

Here is one more fact to chew on - i was there at the auction in person...i was watching exactly who bid...i know exactly who the second highest bidder was at just under 10k....take 3 guesses....and no prizes !

Enjoy !

I'm still confused as to how it got the AMG engine in it?

It was a 230E, then sent to Strattons / AMG by the owner to do the conversion which entailed :

5.6 Quad cam M117
AMG bodykit
AMG wheels
AMG Gleason-Torsen differential
AMG exhaust
560E badge

The 560E was an option on Strattons list of modifications - i shall scan up the Strattons advert on this and the article on the car and post up later.

Congratulations on owning an important piece of MB history.

Given your track record in restoration, of which I am in awe as a shadetree mechanic who likes to restore older cars myself, I am positive it has a very bright future ahead of it.

Please keep us all up to date with your progress, reading about other people and their restorations is what keeps me going when none of my friends and family understand my obsession with Mercedes-Benz.

Best Regards,

Richard

Here is one more fact to chew on ....

talbir

See , this is what i mean ....

I personally have no interest in who bought the car , you , Vlad , anyone really ... the car appealled to me because of what it was ....

I'm not bothered about who was or wasn't there , and to be honest , i'm not interested in you or your cars any more .... or 'chewing' on your facts ...

As I stated earlier , Navs and Simal have spoken very highly of you , and i have admired your cars and projects from afar .... such a let down that the actual person is the way he is ... :(

Never mind.

Cheers Rich !

I think it's crucial to keep these pieces of history intact...they just don't build things like this anymore !

Keeping the balance between wife/kids and cars is a tough one...:-)

Good to see you've made it onto here Talbir, And I will be round with Nav to check this Beast out!

I think the thread has got a little out of hand. Talbir is clearly very passionate about his cars and it shows. Whats been said has been said, but its a gorgeous car with a great history, we know what it is now, lets leave it at that.

You are entitled to your opinion.

Shame that those who give aren't always so ready to take.

You can't tolerate me giving you a fact to chew on...but you expect me to sit quietly whilst others slag my car off !

Wonderful !

Ill bring it round next time I pop round (ive got a coupe and a saloon), but I think we'll spend most of the time checking this 560e out! Ive got a spare rear bumper if you find the exhaust cut out is too big on yours.

Amen to that.

What a think has been demonstrated in this thread, is something I've unfortunately witnessed on other forums.

Reading text and writing responses is an extremely basic form of communication. One can write something, which someone else can read in the wrong context, which is what I believe is what's happened here.
If this discussion had taken place face to face, we'd all have body language and tones of voice to distinguish the context of the comments.
I'm sure if you guys were to meet one day, current opinions may change.

That's just my 2 pence-worth.
I like the both ya, and your internet postings, so I'll leave it at that :)

My exhaust cut-out too big..???

Oh, you mean the one on the car....!!!;)

Has yours got a cut-out or is it virgin ?

Let's discuss when we meet up....you're a git for having two e36s !!!

If you mean the chap who was featured in Merc Enthusiast, I believe his collection was sold. At least, the 4 cars were certainly advertised with Classic Benz in North West England, but I don't know for a fact if the cars were sold or not.

Thank you , and you are yours ....

I've not 'given' anything towards you , i suspect you have read the whole thread , so you will have seen how i was supportive of the car , the Hammers have always been one of my dream cars ....

I don't 'chew' on facts , that is a dreadful Americanism , and no i don't expect you to sit idly by while people tear the car to bits , but to be honest , what was said was one other mans opinion , you may not think that your attitude is confrontational , but others may do .

Anyway , we're off on the wrong foot , i'm interested in the car ( as it is now the only RHD Hammer in the UK ) and would be interested to watch the build progress. You're quite local to me , so perhaps one day i'll see it in person somewhere ;)

Best wishes

Did i spell that right ????

H, you're being a tad harsh in fairness, especially after a few posts. Wasn't this forum the friendly one :D

I think its very harsh to sit behind a PC and pass judgement on someone else's character.

Talbir has come to this forum to defend his car, which was stated as requiring significant work and possibly an accident damage write off. I think his comments maybe point blank but given the circumstances maybe justifyable.
