The numbers don't add up, do they?

While talking to a mate (yes, I do know some people), I mentioned my CLS. He asked which version I owned and I responded that I had the C218. A woman stood behind me laughed and said that she had a brand new C220.

How do you explain to someone that her C220 is actually a W205?

My mate did chuckle as she strolled off with her head held high.

Then again, my mother drives a B180, which is a W245 and trumps the 205 and 218.

So what is the point of this thread? There isn't one really. Only the fact that we'd have to be a true MB aficionado to understand all those numbers and what they mean. Even today, I have to check when some numbers are reeled off.

...How do you explain to someone that her C220 is actually a W205?...

A C220 could be either W203, S203, W204, S204, C204, W205, S205, or C205.........

Depending on who you ask, mine is either a W203 or a CL203...

True story...

Once had someone seriously nearly not buy my E320 CDi because I’d debadged it and he wasn’t sure how else to tell it was an E320....

I used to own a PC Cresta. I never found it to be offensive to others so I suppose it was PC.

Sounds like a nice person

Probably indicative of increasing numbers of new Merc buyers since Merc started targeting owners of The Other ‘Premium’ German brands ;)

(Caveat: meant in jest and with apologies to all other Merc owners who have owned cars made by one or more of Audi and BMW...:D)

She probably was a nice person, it's just that C220's can be funny cars...

My favourite is the other way round.

I had a mechanic tell me once, when telling me about possible parts, 'we call you car a w219' with a mildly condescending tone.

He seemed slightly miffed when I told him 'i know.... its based on the W211 and has many interchangeable parts'.

Its also the perfect indicator someone is not as intersted in cars (maybe as you first thought) as you. Start talking in model numbers their eyes being to glaze over :D

A few years back I was interested in a Mondeo, don't ask me why. Anyway, I was walking throught the Peterborough Motorpoint when a young man asked if he could help me. I enquired as to how many Mondeo Mk IVs he had, and his response was, 'We only sell cars up to two years old Sir'. It was quite funny to tell him that the Mk IV was the current Mondeo model, but it begs the question as to whether someone has the knowledge to sell a car if they don't know what they are talking about.

Even franchised dealers employ salespeople who often don't know what they are selling.

.......no they don't always add up, sometime they minus. Don't understand why a C219 was replaced with a C218

While model/engine number " speak " may be annoying to many people may I present the other side of the coin..
On quite a frequent basis we get "guess the model" posts on the forum. "My C class ????????? engine is making a squeaking/rumbling/loud/strange/ noise when its cold /hot / starting / after being parked up for 4 years! -----should I change the oil?
I would merely suggest that just like a tourist visiting a new country you are likely to get more out of your visit by learning a bit of the local lingua franca:dk:

...because a w220 is an S Class.
