Thermotronic problem in 2002 E270 W211

Hi - a friend has a newer model to mine and has an issue with the aircon system.
The issue started when he had the battery and alternator changed by an independent garage (no MB STAR etc).
The aircon displays "AC OFF" in small letters on the Thermotronic control display. Furious pressing of buttons doesn't make it turn back on.

It *might* be a similar thing to these threads which I looked at;

Update - my mate had the aircon gas recharged, it was on the low side but it is now full, though the ACoff remains. Nobody has seen this?

Would have to be diagnosed, could be a sensor failure. The four zone system has a self diagnosis mode too, you could read different sensor values from the display (press the REST button for 5 seconds).
