Top 5 used cars to make money on

ive made profit on the last 12 cars ive owned but i buy keenly on ebay and only keep for about 6 months. all that driving over the last 5 or so years and ive made money... rather than loose any

I've had a mk11 GTi, didn't make money on it, but did keep it 6yrs and only lost 1500quid, i had the 8valve version and consider that to be better for road use as it has a better spread of torque. The only cars i made anything on were a mini metro (bought for £40 sold for £200) a mk1 golf 1100 (£50 sold for £150) and a porsche 944s (£2000 sold £2250)

Lets face it unless you are in the business of selling cars then you are never going to make money on them unless you are a speculator that puts their name down on certain new models and then sells when he picks it up. The old R170 SLK was one there was one in a local garage when they first came out that went for 10k over list and the sunday papers had guys trying to sell their place on the waiting list for 2K, I think those days are about over.

Golfs seem to be a good bet. My Brother opicked one up for £25, took it straight for MOT (one headlamp bulb), took it home to wash it and someone walked up and offered £400 for it.
profit, about £340, time less than an hour=result.:)

A friend's relative does this in Australia for a living. Using the profits, he now owns a Lamborghini Gallardo and a Bentley Continental GT. Nice work.

Are these two cars good investments?

Mk1 Lotus Cortina, Ford Cortina 1600E and is this car a good investment? The Rover P5

Do not think you will make much on them but there again you will not lose much either.

any air cooled 911 seems to be a winner..
Or i would say a good old 6 series bmw..i sold one to granada studious for almost a blank cheque..one of those every month would be fairly useful

I think that an E320 cabrio is a good bet too.........

The Lotus Cortina is already pretty valuable, particulary the A-frame models, which will realise £15-£18k in mint condition. You're not going to lose a great deal, but they are unlikely to return a huge profit in the near future (for that, you'll need to find youself an England World Cup car, and buy it cheap).

The 1600E is already about the most valuable 'standard' Cortina, and with decent ones looking for £4k, you are unlikely to make much on them.

Likewise the P5. To be worth much, it has to be a Buick engined coupe, really, and £10-11k is top money for one of those. I don't reckon they'll appreciate much more either.

Thanks for the input, they are simply my favourite older English vehicles and I suppose I was hoping they might show a profit. Mind you there prices have increased hugely from when they were new.

Ah, he mentions the MkII VW Golf GTi 16v in Oak Green - the very car I lusted over as a yoof. The car both me and my Dad wanted so bad, but could never have afforded at the time. Maybe it's time to put the record straight - now where can I find a minter?

("yoof" - see I'm still down with the kids even though I have silver - not grey - hairs these days).

You can find minters, but as you know they come at a premium!

I wanted one too, saw one at Christmas time last year however didn't have the cash then, so ended up with WHITE, which is also very nice;)

Love the 18 month delay in reply!!

And how odd this thread seems now with prices falling through the floor on so called collectibles!
