V Power Petrol Prices

Since 86.2 % of diesel is carbon, getting it build up in engines eventually is pretty inevitable no matter how good the fuel is. My leggy derv has never needed any internal cleaning except the EGR valve...

The detergents in the fuel additive will limit the carbon build-up.

When you say your "leggy derv has never needed any internal cleaning", as per my previous post, carbon build-up reduces engine performance and increases fuel consumption over time, so the term "need" is a subjective one. You seem to accept that your engine is just 'leggy', and that's fine, but some prefer to use additives and keep their engines' performance and fuel efficiency as best as possible.

I wonder how many taxi drivers use V power diesel in there 250,000 miles Mercs and Skoda’s etc without issues ?

I don't think it makes commercial sense for taxi drivers to use premium fuels, for the same reason that they are unlikely to use PS4 tyres.

But I would expect the savvy taxi owner to put a bottle of Redex or Forte in the tank every now and then to keep the engine in top shape. It's more cost effective than regular use of premium fuels and essentially achieves the same effect.

I don't know of a single taxi driver who uses premium fuel! I know some occasionally use redex or similar but normally only if the car feels "sluggish". My business partner has 5 rental taxis all over 250000 miles and although they're serviced regularly they just use cheap supermarket fuel.

This makes sense. Also typically using budget tyres. When you're car is your business, the bottom line is the food that put on the table....

Leggy is just trade speak for high miles.....Runs like new....although its back to stock now its had two maps and one tuning box over my ownership with no ill effects. Runs and sounds like new on a diet of almost exclusively Tesco derv.....for no other reason than convenience. Just about to roll over 171,000 miles.

If you believe that there's no carbon build-up inside the engine and the intake system - that could have potentially been avoided by regular use of fuel additives - then I can't argue with beliefs. We'll have to leave it there I suppose.

Firstly, we do often see here issues that could have potentially been avoided by using premium fuels (or, alternatively, just by regular use of fuel additives), but these relate more to Diesel engines where the injectors can get gummed-up with cr@p etc.

Then, it's difficult to know what the benefits (if any) of premium fuels are just by looking at breakdowns. The theory is that gradual carbon build-up over time robs the engine of its performance and increases fuel consumption. Most motorists do not regularly test their cars on a Dyno, or keep detailed fuel consumption logs, and in the event that the car feels sluggish and consumes more fuel they'll typically just put it down to age and mileage.

In short, I don't know for fact how much better are engines that have been treated to fuels with the supposedly better additives pack, but just to say that the fact the petrol engines don't end-up exploding when being fed only standard fuel is neither here nor there as far as this debate is concerned.
I should have been clearer, but I was specifically referring to V-power petrol compared to Momentum 99 :)

I have owned about fifty cars over the years and I think about twenty Mercedes-Benz, driven plenty of others but I’ve never owned a diesel ;)

No amount of fuel additives can keep your intake or the back of the valves clean in a modernish engine....the fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber....so thats about the only part that even possible be cleaner. Its not like old cars with intake injection or carbs. Some of the very latest engines have injectors in the ports as well as the head...to try and stop intakes getting too gunged up from EGR and PCV residue.

So you're saying that it's an industry based on deception? That your 'common sense' assessment defies the product manufacturers' claims?

Again, I can't argue with that.

Hi , l know a taxi owner and this how he covers the cost on his cars.

Only purchases petrol engine cars because when diesel engines fail they are expensive to repair in comparison to petrol engines.

He only purchases mid price tyres and they suit his business model. As he said when taxi drivers start using cars they generally animals in car care.

He changes the engine oil in his cars ever 5000 miles , but he drains out the engine from the new cars are re uses the oil in his older fleet.

All cars are inspected ever 7 days in his own work shops.

It works for his cars.

Lol....you clearly have no mechanical knowledge what so ever....so I definitely CAN'T argue with that!

Indeed... no mechanical knowledge... but I can read English. But of course they could all be lying....

They are not lying....you just don't know the defence between direct injection and indirect injection....so no matter what they claim those additives in the fuel can't clean the intake manifold, the intake ports or the back of the intake valves because in a modern direct injection engine without the very latest extra port injection, the fuel gets NOWHERE NEAR THEM! Understand now?

If that's aimed at me......I agree!.....and at the same time apologise! I have have accept that some on here are very bright have an all most encyclopaedic knowledge of these cars and understand engineering, mechanics and how stuff works.....and some are thick as a Gurkha's foreskin ........and some are not! Which is fine.....they can afford to pay the workshops so they don't need to know.....I've not always been in that position so learning how stuff worked to be able to fix it myself was essential to keep my bikes and cars on the road!! I earning my living as a mechanic for a while too and have only recently given up doing the odd paid job on my drive for beer money.

The Gurkha thing was only a joke and no aimed at anyone in particular.....that was one of my grandads favourite sayings for the less intelligent. He was drill Sergeant in the Royal Norfolk Regiment.....and part of his job was training Gurkhas. He had the greatest respect for them as they were tough as nails and mostly had chests like barrels from a lifetime of the effort of high altitude living and breathing.

I'll dial it back a bit.....just a little bit!...and keep my opinions to myself a bit more. 👍

I suggest you don't repeat your comments to this chap, though.

Maybe start a new thread chap, this thread is about shell v power prices.. don't really want to be reading about your grandad and gurkhas.. #justsaying

It was in reply to a previous comment....if you don't want to read it don't...or block me...if you can do that in this forum. There are literally dozens of posts in this thread not referring to Vpower prices. Get over yourself!.....chap!

There goes me "dailing it back a bit"!

Back on topic.
