V6CDi loss of power

The shed has broken down, again.

It was taken in and the inlet port motor tested, it works. A clip had apparently broken meaning the rod that the motor connects to operating the inlet flap was not attached.

Said clip failed, 30 miles covered on Thursday all was good on the shed.

The shed was laid up yesterday as I took the train to work.

3 miles into my trip to Edinburgh (via LTD's for a quick natter) and the fault reappeared. Loss of power. I stopped to call LTD to see not going to make it, had a natter, and started car up.

Hey presto, it worked, full power was back and a high speed run from Loch Lomond to Whitecart viaduct was undertaken at significant speed.

Problem re-appeared, no power. I've taken her home.

I've phoned the garage I use who said they'll look at the car on Wednesday.

I was skeptical re the clip explanation they gave but the car was drivable for 30 miles at full power.

I think they'll need to look into the following:

1. Blocked manifolds with a view to cleaning or changing them
2. Oil leaking from the Turbo and the seal.
3. Replacing the motor and cleaning the crap out from the area?

Anyone else experienced with these engines suggest anything else that should be done?

Its also had a full major service, filters etc changed, could air have got into the fuel lines, would that cause this?

Needless to say, I am extremely unhappy that the car is yet again unusable and its really testing my patience with it.

Bad luck Steve, especially annoying at this time of year.

Fingers crossed for a easy resolution.

Fecked over xmas and new year, timing makes the fault seem worse.

I did say to the garage I was somewhat skeptical re the diagnosis as it was an odd one, but the car did work, albiet briefly.

They need to rectify and do the work I requested, which I wasn't billed for, at a suitable discounted price as they've not fixed the fault and at this stage, their diagnosis was wrong.

Sorry to hear you're still having problems - more so at this time of year. Keep us posted on progress & hopefully a satisfactory resolution.

I would have the motor changed considering the ball ache it is to get to it.

If oil leaking onto the motor is the main problem, can something not be done or modified to stop this? Placing something round the motor? Clearly the modified seal still does not stop this.

Either way, hope your back on the road soon and keep us posted.

Sorry to hear about all the troubles.

stop calling it shed, it's slowly starting to live up to its name lol.

Time for a CLS500 steve!

It's a complete basket case of a shed...

All kidding aside I reckon the garage might not have for it 100% right so I will leave it to them to fix.

A CLS and other non Mercedes cars will be on a future *** shopping list once I can afford to purchase another car, cash.

I've read this thread, and paranoia has set in!! What can be done to prevent this foul malaise? W204 C320cdi 65k miles, no problem so far...

It might have failed previously. I'd say get the manifolds cleaned and ensure oil isn't leaking from the turbo

Just remember and repeat these important words:

It's a forum - all the badness comes to the fore
It's a forum - all the badness comes to the fore

Do you feel better ;):D

Much better! Paranoia folded up and hidden under the spare bed again:)

Drive it hard with high RPM once a week.

Drive it hard with high RPM once a week.

I do and thats motor number two gone, it frequently is driven hard to speeds that officers get interested in and accelerated like I stole it.

On the other forum there are suggestions of failed linkages from the motor to the flaps on the intake....

In your experience, is that common?

Would getting the manifold cleaned, any leak investigated then fixed prevent this happenening for a long time, ever?

What more, bar a good revving 1x/week do I need to do?

Hi guys I've got the loss of power on my e320 cdi today morning on my way to work but I used to hear a whistle blowing sound for the last few days and I was going to take it to garage this weekend. Apparently the car didn't make it to weekends and on my way to work today I got on motorway on 80 mph the engine management light come on and the loss of power on engine. Any advise what it could be? Thanks in advance guys

When we do this job we always replace the manifolds. The flaps and associated mechanism wears quite a bit. The consequence of one of the flaps breaking off could be horific. So we prefer to do a proper job and replace with new.

Cleaning them is an option if they are not worn but every one I have done here has been worn.

So far we have never done the job twice and we must have done 20 or so.

Get it plugged in to find the cause of the light. This will guide you to the cause of the fault.

Got in the car after work everything seems fine the power the kickdown but the engine management light is still on I'll get it pluget to the machine later

The shed behaved itself today but cheers for the chat Olly. I fear it will be the manifold and the flaps sticking. The clip failed which will be I bet due to increased resistance on the linkage.

I'll have the codes read, pray its not the turbo itself and get the manifold changed

I was going to take it to garage for diagnostic but the light just gone today does anyone have a clue what it could be? The loss of power with the engine management light on and everything gone/fixed by itself in a one day time and everything seems fine

It's in good hands at least.
