W124 500E - put a deposit down.

Nice car, I saw it come up on ebay and thought it was one of the best id seen in a while in a realistic price range.

I saw this one on eBay. She really looks a rather lovely thing. Enjoy! I need to get one these one day...

Also saw this pop up around a week ago. Looks like clean and rust free car, which is the most important thing about these cars - everything else like wheels etc can be easily sorted. The one thing i would change first is that speedo, but might be hard to come by being 300kph. Next I would swap the front indicators to amber - imo looks much classier on pre-facelift. :thumb:

Love the fact lots of people won't have clue what it is. Hope I get to see it round town... ;-)

Well done Bill, looks great.

You've been looking for years!

Nice car, let me know once you have it be good to see the car ( I sold your uncle a green c43 many moons ago ).

Wow what a awesome car!!
Enjoy it!

Dont see it as cheap,no history all that lorinser stuff will end up been taken off,if it needs some engine work, minimum a full service etc,new speedo and if you went to sell it as you know, first question is how many miles, can you prove it with history etc. These cars can run into big money fast if not maintained over their lifetime
Heat is a factor on Jap stuff headlinnings etc rubber seals and at £180 a door for example small but adds up,
But a bargain price !!!!

Cheers for the input Danny, I think it's priced right. Agreed there isn't much history but these cars you buy on condition and how they run rather than stacks of paperwork (which is pointless if it's running like a dog anyway). Buying any old Mercedes is risky and everything is a gamble but it seems to be a straight enough car and reasonably priced so I'm not afraid to go for it.

Plus good 500E's are quite rare and Japanese cars are generally well maintained. They're rust free if from the south, most 500E's in Europe have rust and more if poorly maintained from the salted roads. Front wings are £££

Headlining etc. on this one is fine. Plus I'll have it down anyways for an alcantera retrim before the summer. Agreed re maintenance, it'll get oil, air, pollen, fuel, oil filters, dist caps and rotors, suspension bushes, discs and pads, brake, coolant, transmission and diff oil as soon as I collect. I'd probably do that lot on any old Mercedes that I plan to keep regardless of it's history. I will also be replacing the intake hoses on the front, air con if it needs doing, alloys and tyres for something better (maybe BBS's), ASR defeat, FGS module, shocks and springs may get replaced depending on condition etc etc.

It'll be a keeper so I don't mind throwing some £££ it's way to get it right :thumb:

I agree, it looks stunning, hard to believe its a 1992, if it were mine I would leave it as it is, even the wheels.

I agree to an extent but as you know the last service overhaul on my car was nearly half the price of yours

All that said I wish you the very best with it and many happy miles, its an exclusive club you are in now and they are only going one way,

Cheers Danny - I hope it's as good as described. It'd be good to meet you at one of the w124 days and see your motor :thumb:

Congratulations on the new car. I spotted that 500E when it came up on eBay too. Looks lovely, hoping it all checks out fine and that you get to look after it :)

It would certainly be a nice drive back!

As others have said, some of the lorinser stuff on that is quite nice, certainly rare and period.

Good luck and look forward to seeing more pictures of it.

Hey all. So after a 600 mile round trip the 500E is back home with me :D:D:D

The car is very very good (probably one of the better 500E's) but not perfect as it developed a rough idle once I drove it pretty hard on the test drive. The interior lights also don't work (so no instrument cluster or console switch lights - I had a pitch black journey home). Suppose I was quite excited and knew this was the one I wanted so we negotiated on the price and I drove home. To say i'm delighted is an understatment! The 500E is everything I wanted and more :D

So I will be giving it a full service, probably next weekend. It drove 300 miles straight down without fault (with a few naughty brushes of the throttle this thing builds speed, fast) but as soon as you get to standstill there is a misfire/rough idle. My first port of call will be the distributor caps and rotor arms and go from there. Probably good idea to get it plugged in, it's not been serviced/touched since Japan and who knows how long it's been left without a service.

The wiring harness looks to have been changed, the cables at the top look nice and fresh. There is a minor oil leak which I could see from underneath so this will be checked.

The interior is in mint condition and to my surprise everything works, all the seats, blower motor, heated seats, sunroof, sunshade, everything is super smooth :)

The exterior is very good, some of the panels have some crazing as if it's been through a million car washes but i'm not too fussed as it's a project car and will be stunning by the summer with some paintwork.

All in all i'm happy and looking forward to getting stuck it!

Few things:

1. anyone have any ideas about the interior lights? Instrument cluster and all functions work (heated seats etc light up when pressed) but no back lights for the buttons and no backlight for the cluster - i've checked fuses to no avil.
2. anyone know a good MB specialist in the London area? I don't mind travelling but things like gearbox oil / fuel filters etc I probably wouldn't tackle at home due to lack of resources
3. how do I get access to the MB projects section to start a journal?

Quick photo before I started the long drive home:

Cheers,

Bill

Nice car, looks great even before you've started. Not sure where you are in London but a trip to Harrow to give it to Terry at Wayne Gates would be my advice. He's highly recommended, do a search on here, you won't be disappointed.

Sorry I can't help much with the faults you have but congrats on the car! Man alive that is lovely. Such a capable classic car. If I could convince the wife I would trade the cls and use one daily! What I would spend extra in fuel would be offset by zero depreciation... Win!:thumb:

Great looking car, very rare to find one rust free!

Sorry can't help with the faults you've listed.

Was curios as to why it's a left hand drive? In Japan they drive on the left and most of the cars are RHD.

Definitely recommend Terry at Wayne Gates. I'm sure he'd love to work on this too :)
