Hi All,

The other day i heard a screeching noise coming form the engine bay i thought it was the belt (so left the car at home and went to buy a new belt) but after replacing the belt yesterday i noticed the noise was still there and so i investigated further, the niose sounded like it was coming from the PAS pump, so i took the belt off and gave teh pulley a wiggle, there is back and forth movement on the pulley, so i am thinking the pump is dead, even though the oower steering works.

My question is there a pulley repair kit for the pump or is it just time to fork out the £365 excluding vat and buy a new pump.

Your input is much appreciated.

Just been searching the net and I have found a few sites that say you can replace the pulley to get rid of the screeching noise from worn bearings is this true for the W124? As I see this as a cheaper fix as my pump seems fine other than the noisey pulley.

PS does anyone in the west london area have access to a Power steering pump pulley extractor?

Usually a screeeching noise from the pulley area is the belt tensioner and not the PSP.

Belt tensioner pulley seems fine, out of all the pulleys its just the one on the PAS pump that is wobbly so i am suspecting this.

have you checked the fluid level?

Fluid level is spot on, the max mark is just visible.

Is the pulley supposed to have any movement in it? i can push the pulley into the pump and out by a mm or two, is this normal? no other pulley has any play in it.

Did you ever get an answer to this? I have a similar amount of play and a bit of a squeak on mine. Otherwise the PAS is fine.

Do let me know.

Thanks.
