W124 e320 not engaging 5th gear

from what i remember boomtings, your problem is most likely to be the gear stick microswitch. this will not show up as a fault, as someone (kth286?) has pointed out. the best way to determine if this switch is working would be with a multimeter.

good luck!!!!

Twas me....I have the pin-outs from the controller end if you want to test the switch from the bonnet instead of underneath...

can I have the controller pin-outs please.

I might be able to get the car on a ramp where should i can i find the switch wire? ( ill reread all the post because i think you may have mentioned it)

had another one in today. '94-95 E320 coupe. it did have the socket 13.

boomtings, your control unit is behind the ecus behind the battery. if you remove the plug on top you can check the pin data with this info...

STAR TekInfo

then you will see if that switch is working.

Thanks guys for all the info , there are some real helpful people on this forum!:bannana:

Ive built a test cable loom for the 16 pin , I know it most likely wont help with the gearbox fault.

Ill try and test the gearbox controller with a multimeter soon as I get some time away from work!

regards

Solved.

After winter the last couple of weekends have been spent tinkering with mercs. I fixed this vacumn line that i posted about before and 5th gears working fine now!

http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/75954-w124-e320-leak-whats-component.html

page 14 of this link shows the part clearer, still dont know exactly why only 4 to 5 change was effected and not all gears (or was it only noticable in this gear)

http://www.ps2cho.net/downloads/MB CD/W124/Index/MiscFiles/MY1992w124intro.pdf

the hose was secured with new rubber and hey presto 5th gear.

thanks to everyone.

Boomtings, your first link doesn't work, is there another?

hello ray, please join us here, this gearbox and associated problems are not everyday stuff so the more the merrier.

Mine is a W124 300-24 and the 'box diagnostic pin is Pin 13.

Mine was engaging 4th for half a second then 5th.

I built a LED-type code reader and read 8 flashes. I removed the stored code and now get 1 flash.

I now have a 5-speed box that works as it should.

If this thread comes back to life again, I'll report again, particularly regarding whether the fault recurs.

More as it happens and major thanks to all.

RayH

PS: all my other issues with misfires etc. have been ignition-related. Got a new MB rotor arm, cap on order to replace the 19-year-old original that's working fine! Beru leads. Recent new Beru plugs got rid of final slight very hot hesitation when first starting after leaving very hot car for, say, 25 mins.

Can you give me instructions to test the 16 pin as my 300ce-24 wont engage 5th gear either, tho all other gears work perfectly.
Cheers

Sorry, can't do much as my old PC with all the diagrams is back at home and I'm now working in Paris.

But, I posted details on the UK and some US forums under the name ray_hennig (here) and rayhennig elsewhere.

Google these names and you should find the threads.

Bon courage.

Hi. I have exactly the same problem with a W210 320 E. My car has the 722.5 gearbox - 4 speed automatic with 5th electronic. All gears work smoothly, last oil and filter clean 2 years ago - just will not change to 5th. No operation of the lever between D and 4 does anything so I am fervently hoping it is the selector switch. Do advise if you can sort yours out. Thanks Graham
