W201 sunroof making a funny "clacking" noise.

The sunroof on my 1984 190E started to make a nasty mechanical noise when fully closed with the switch still pressed. Opens and closes perfectly (its an early 190 so the roof doesn't tilt) and theres no noise during closing or opening, only if you keep the button pressed or if you press it while closed. Seems to come from about a foot back from the back edge of the roof opening and under the headlining, and sounds a bit like something spinning off a cog.

Any ideas?

My 1993 1.8 does similar thing asked my mechanic friend his answer " take your finger off it once closed" makes sense really! Incidentally saw your pics is that the one from Cheshire classic benz from a few months back? one doctor owner from new looks really nice great mileage too.

Thats the one tilbo, nearly up to 36k miles now, I'll have to cut down a bit Your mechanics advice is a bit like the old Tommy Cooper joke "Doctor, it hurts when I move my arm. - Well don't move your arm!"
