w202 C43 vs C36

Great info cheers. Love that cloth on the second pic. I'd ideally want leather tho, so if it's a c36 looks like will be black.
Leather was standard on the C43, duo Silver/Black, duo Blue/Black or straight black. (there may be more designo ones, but I haven't seen any).

EU C36's had cloth as standard.

Most C36 optioned to leather, as far as I know only black leather was availble until around the facelift when grey leather was introduced. I have never seen any other shades on the C36.

If you are thinking of a Jap import buy a C43 not a C36. The humid temps in Japan and the low mileages sitting in city traffic kills the C36 looms even more than over here :)

But for some reason the jap C43s are a lot rarer than the C36
I thought it was only the earlier c36's that had the biodegradable looms? Therefore thought if I looked for a late 1997 model it would be ok?

Don't know if I would dare to buy an 97 C36?
These cars were fitted with the first version 5 speed electronic 722.6 trannies which were prone to bomb.
If you want a C36 go with a 4 speed tranny.

Late model c43 with a tiptronic 5 speed auto (difficult to find) with 17" amg style 2 wheels. Rust is the only thing to look out for and ought to be inspected properly to check out. I would have gone for a c43 estate but Mr Khan's EURO4 26/10/2021 deadline put paid to that.

Back in those days AMG offered quite a lot of individual customisation.

I know for a fact you could have two tone leather and different wood options on the C36 for example

Just came down to a matter of cost :thumb:

AMG Japan did things their own way so wouldn't bank on it. It's not unknown to have wiring issues with jap 500e's, just does not happen with the euro ones.

That optional price list looks a bit suspect - my C36 has the original invoice with it of £49,500 including options and that one reckons to have circa £20k’s worth!
It’s in Deutschmark, not Sterling ;)

Can't give you a comparison Simon, as I have never had a 36 (and certainly wouldn't say no to one) and the 43 I won has spent all of its time in my ownership under restoration. It has certainly taken a lot longer than expected, worth a read if you haven't done so, just to have a nosey at some pics to show you the hidden and not so hidden corrosion which is probably the biggest killers of these fabulous underated cars.

Good luck with your search.

I agree, mine is in for new sills, inner and outer, right now!

I thought it was rust free when I bought it, the rot had been hidden well. It wasnt a cheap one either! But that's my problem now anyhow. Just tread with care! :)

Yes Abb, I saw your thread. I haven't been through it all, but know they are far more prone to corrosion than the later models such as my s211. I'll have a full read through yours for some pointers.

Simon my C43 was my introduction to the AMG curse :wallbash: What a great car which Olly bought from me after owning it for six years, he would give you all the pros and cons. All of the above advise is spot on, you will enjoy the 43 if you go down that route. Good luck.

I went to view my first car this afternoon. It was a one owner low mileage c43 saloon, with a decent spec. Dealer is wanting what I feel is top money for it so I was hoping for good things. Well it was a massive disappointment!!! It drove well enough and performance wise was ok, about what I was expecting so that was a bonus. The interior is a nice place to be generally, although the hard plastic centre armrest and door armrests really let it down and were a bit creaky, unlike the rock solid build on my car. But...... the condition of the exterior was poor and not what I was expecting at all. Ok its a 1999 car so is 20 years old, but that makes it only 5 years older than my wagon. It had a fair bit of corrosion in the usual places. I could see it had had lots of previous paint done and none of it was great. Only good thing is that at least I have seen and driven one. I wanted to go and see the 1997 c36 I put in the link as that had similar mileage and would have been good for comparison being a 36, but that car sold earlier this week.

Maybe I am expecting too much, but parking it next to my car, just highlighted a massive difference. The dealer asked for some feedback after I said that I wasn't interested. My car was sitting right in front of them, so I think they knew what I was going to say. I pointed out everything that needed doing for them to describe it as beautiful. I know my car a very good example and is in very good condition, but I still wouldn't call it totally mint. I am looking for a car that compares well with what I already have. My car is about to turn 92K miles, so a well cared for car with lower miles 5 to 7 years older should be able to get close I would think:dk::dk:
