Is it possible to make a fault code reader for the W202 with the 32 pin connector,I know it would only be for basic tests but would come in handy.

The reason I am asking is because of the thread regards the one for the W124.

Thanks all in anticipation.

I assume it's the same as the one for the W124 (and that you mean 38-pin, not 32), because they can both be read with an off-the-shelf CS1000 scanner, so in theory they can both be read with the home-made jobbie.

The later cars are digital as opposed to analogue so can't be read by an analogue scanner.
You need a digital code reader.

If you prove me wrong then I'm a happy chappie, but I doubt it.

Doofus bring you scanner along to Jays do please.

DM knows what he's talking about, so don't listen to me.

Will do.

Thanks guys
Yes as you say 38 pin sorry

Hi Dieselman
I have contacted the link you gave me for the code reader and had this back it does say not suitable for cars with CAN-Bus,what do you think.

Hi Norman,

We do not sell a code reader with theis connection but do sell the adapter cables to go with the code readers.

I would recommend the U381 with the adapter cable for your car

Can anybody on the forum help with this scanner regards what I would be able to do with it.

It seems very cheap to be much good quite honestly surely it won't do a diagnostic and clear the fault log as well.

I know the repair will have to be done first before it will clear.

My homemade thingy will read and clear fault codes, so I would have thought that thing would.

The blurb says "Reads and clears generic and manufacturer specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes ", and if the chap has recommended it to you then it should work, and if it doesn't he couldn't really refuse to take it back.

I think it will work with the adapter cable because your car isn't using the CAN for diagnostics, it's using pins 4 and 15 for ISO protocol.

I would be interested to see if this works because our collective thoughts couldn't get a scan gauge to work on 230k diesel, but the petrol does work with that device, so I believe it would with yours as well.

You won't get the full functionality that a Star has as this is an EOBDII reader, so focuses on engine problems, which is probably all you are after anyway.

I've been doing a little reasearch and was thinking of trying a diy interface as here. Google suggests mercedes only use K-Line (on lots of different pins depending on the systems) some information on the pin out can be found on page 13 here (which suggests pin is the one for the engine management systems).

Has anyone tried a diy solution?

Also notice Bazzle has posted a lot about interfaces on benzworld.

Hi Guys
Got the scanner today and it is a nice bit of kit for the money, comes with a disc with all the fault codes on,a means of upgrading the software from their web site, a hand book that you can read (not Chinese conversion) and a zip up bag to carry it all in it has a handle or belt loop.

I had to get the 38 pin cable as the scanner is 6 pin, what I like is you can erase codes after the repair has been done also service check.

Can anybody tell me how to find out if my car is definitely OBD-11 compliant the guy that sold the scanner says it is but there is nothing in my service book or under the bonnet to say it is

Your 99 W202 is not OBD-II compliant. Merc OBD-II compliant from March 2001.

Thanks Dragon
That's what the book says that came with the scanner it was 1996 in the US but not in Europe until as you say 2001

I think you will find that it works Ok as the ECU is outputting ISO K line on Pin4, it just doesn't have the OBDII socket inside the car.
Could be a nice mod.

It also says in the handbook a lot of European manufacturers equipped there vehicles with D-shaped 16 pin connectors long before they began installing OBD-11 systems on there vehicles.

Good fun ain't it

I tried the scanner and it is communicating with the ECU as you can hear clicking etc from the engine compartment.

I did not buy the scanner because I had a problem I just thought it is a handy bit of gear to have on hand so when I connected it to the car of course it says no codes found.

What do you mean by a nice mod Dieselman
