During my last service I decided to remove my K and N because its filthy and put a stock one back in (for now!). The main differeneare the throttle response was much better with the k and n fitted, but the stock one seems to be quieter and the changes up are slower (they dont happen so soon).

In the summer with the k and N fitted (remember my car is chipped as well) it wasgoing very well and I recorded a 0-60 of 8.4secs which for a 2 litre auto was not bad. Last night I decided to test it without the k and n, and on damp roads. The best I could do was 9.4sec.

I dont believe the K and N makes much difference to the power output but it seems to effect throttle responses and gearchanges a lot!

THE REQUEST .

Could w202 owners (especially C200 auto owners) tell me what your 0-60 times are and what state of tune the engine is in ie. chips, filters, Turbos(Koolvin) are fitted. EDIT and if yours is an auto or a manual.

This is not about whose car is fastest coz Maffs is, its about what effect the filter is or isnt having.

Drive safely.

I have done this test several times, the K&N definetly gives better throttle response and you hear the turbo picking up quicker with it. Like you say, the induction noise is louder with the K&N.

Not fair to compare petrol with diesel (cos diesel is better!) but 0-60 I reckon to be around the 8 second mark too, hopefully we will do a timed session at Bruntingthorpe. It's at faster speeds that it feels much quicker rather than the traffic light grand prix.

You have to remember that with the K&N that the dirtier it is the better it filters, I did try to get a green cotton filter but didnt get very far.

Supply me with a spare MAS on standby and I'll give it a go for you!

go on with ya! you were just unlucky!

and not stupid enough to try it again :D

I almost if not too ashamed to say I managed 10.3 with the rear head rests folded down :o I shall try later with the K&N fitted this time.
4spd auto no engine mods

Thanks for trying Pluggers. I'll be interested to know what difference you get with your k and n fitted. Re my 8.4 with and 9.4 without times remember my car is chipped as well.

Is that a gentle ish start or an ASR off, brake standing, revs up, slight wheel spin away with a bit of a fish tail jobbie?

Just so I know.

Oh and how do you actually time yourself?

60mph is right on my change to 3rd gear so I cant operate any stop watches!!

The later! Max traction (in the wet!) as little wheel spin as possible. My son tells me when to nail it and I tell to stop at 58 mph so that it allows for hisreaction time.

My first atempt was all spin and wagging = 11.5sec, then a bit of control 9.6secs, and a final 9.4sec for getting it right. Same process in the summer, with the k and n in, netted 8.4 seconds!

[thread hijack] ..... I have a brand new (only tested !) 202 K&N for sale still if anybody is interested ..... [/thread hijack]

interesting thread and not one I'll be contributing any times to with my c220 non turbo diesel :p (ex unleaded ;) )

. . . just a thought though, and I 'm sure it wouldn't matter for a few seconds for one or two runs but what about a run with no filter fitted as perhaps a base line time ?

Just tried my c200 auto (4 speed) a few times and all the times were in the 9 to 9.4 sec mark.

I take it that you havent got any engine mods?

I have never had a Mercedes-Benz speedometer calibrated, but the ones that have been are usually slightly inaccurate and usually over estimating the speed. At a displayed 60mph you could only be travelling at 56mph.

Your times are excellent for your own record keeping, but if the speedometer is not calibrated then it might perhaps be unfair to compare figures.

If your speedometer is calibrated ;) then please disregard all the above.

John

The only way to record the 0-60 accurately would be using the traps at a drag strip or a GPS-type device.

Another alternative would be to calibrate a device using GPS which takes the speedpulse into account. GPS is probably too slow to record 0-60s but the speed pulse would be perfect and you'd not be taking reaction time into account because it starts when the speed of the car is more than 0 and stops when the speed of the car is 60 :)

Someone must make something like that surely!

EDIT: motec make one but it costs thousands! :(
