W203 Add rain sensor / Auto Wipers ?

Mmmm.. Now this is where it gets murky....

miro says there is. I bought the most recent sesnor (now superceded though, how quickly they change!!) and it is 3 wire. Looking through the wiring diags in WIS and it shows the combined RLS as a 3 wire connection. The LS and RLS are exactly the same shape and size. Its the screen that carries the lenses, hence the need for a new screen.

That's odd, it looks like the screen just has a square clear area and the lenses or sensors are held behind it ?

Really hoping Miro can come back with a Part No. for me - It seems strange that the 3 pin would be the newest when my car is the last build 07 ?

Well, here's hoping Miro can come to the rescue with a part number for the light/rain sensor that suits my screen :)

What is the part number you have now ?

The sensor is A203 820 6585

And the holder (which seems to be rubber glued to the screen, and seems like I could remove it if I REALLY wanted to) is A203 820 1511

The lenses are bonded directly to the screen. The way the sensor works is by measuring the amount of reflected IR. The clarity of the bonding and the completness of the "black" around the lenses is critical to performance. There is a section in WIS dealing with the problems of imperfections in this area.

Depending on what Miro comes back with I may well be in the same boat as you WM :)

In which case, I will order up the relevant parts and then wait till my screen needs changing due to stone chip or crack (tends to happen once a year or so with my mileage) and then fit the upgrade.

I'll see what Miro comes back with though, if not I might be asking you for your lists of parts you bought !

It appears that you have the LIGHT sensor. Now after some short analysis of the EPC it becomes apparent that there are 3 types of light sensor and 2 types of rain sensor.

go figure.

2000-2002 (stand alone light sensor)
2003-2006 (3 pin light sensor) or (3 pin ran/light sensor)
2006-2007 (4 pin light sensor) or (3 pin rain/light sensor)

The wiring diagrams didnt make any sense but now I realise what the problem is. I think that there must be some deeper coding of the OCP to overcome this problem after 2006. This is not just a swap and go like it once was.

Many Thanks to Miro and WhiteNemesis for their help on this one, looks like I need a new loom, new sensor, and a plug (to adapt the loom). Total cost is circa £50.00.

I also need a new screen, but will wait till mine needs replacing and simply have it replaced with the one with rain sensor at that time :)

I don't recall having any coding done on the ocp (the front SAM and the EIS, yes) but then I may have blinked at the crucial point :o :D

Can i easily retrofit the sensor?

Wully, this looks like a seperate sensors for the ligh and rain (rain one is missing, obviously ) You have the space for the rain sensor and the attachment lugs ,but no lenses bonded to the screen...

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but the picture wully posted is exactly the same as whats in my car, would it be possible to buy the lense (if it is sold or used by windscreen fitters) and get it bonded in the same way the screen is bonded to the the car, and then fit the sensor????

I've never seen the lenses sold seperately. You could try asking Autoglass I suppose..
Some one out in Australia had this done iirc
MB have always said it's a new windscreen

Thanks, I'll have a word with the Glass guy who does work for the body repair centre next to my work and see what he thinks.... do doubt he will just look at me with the MB parts ./ service guys look

just found this pickie from a 2002 C180K Avantgarde SE with rain sensor installed.
