W203 Add rain sensor / Auto Wipers ?

Hello PRC,
I want to do the same mod as you and my car is a late w203 2006
I have the same screen and sensor as yours , and if I understand right, all I need is new loom , new RLS,..??
Butt are the parts numbers given by MUPPETZ correct?
Because I typed them in MB uk parts search above without results.

Regards

Well went to the local MB parts counter and told them what I was doing with part numbers & VIN written down on a post-it. Part numbers same, but do remember a bit of confusion tracking down loom and plug. Sorry not being able to help further..:o

I am even more confused than ever.

This is what i have just now:-

Can i easily retrofit the sensor?

Hi all,
I had my screen replaced a couple of years ago on my pre-facelift 03 C-coupe. I asked for the rain sensor screen hoping this might give me auto wipers. As it didn't I then forgot about it until this thread!
My screen looks like the above from the outside- with an opaque blue window on the Left, next to the LS. On the inside there is a small silver frame with 4 lenses bonded to the screen, unlike Whitenemesis' array of 8 lenses on his facelift car. The LS has a 4 wire socket to it.
Can anyone tell me how I can get this fired up & working- obviously I need the RS & ?possibly a new loom- will this be correct for my car or did the screen man fit the wrong screen for chassis? Any ideas of which part numbers. Does the roof lining need to come off?
Thank you very much for any help,
Matt

That's the correct screen :)

Now you need the rain sensor and possibly another loom. It really needs a good, helpful parts tech to find the correct parts as they are superseded so often.

The headlining will not need to come out, if you have a little patience you can feed the additional loom back up behind the RVM, drop the OCP and plug in. If your model was offered with rain sensor originally the OCP should be compatible

The sensor will need to be adapted to the screen and the car coded so it knows you have the sensor. This is by STAR.

That cover with the part number comes off, and you add the light sensor, on your car it is not a combined rain/light sensor which is useful

My quick reading of EPCnet gives: -

Rain sensor: A210 820 57 10
Wiring harness is either A203 540 90 06, or A203 440 42 10 - its not obvious which it is, unless your car has option 804 (model year 2004) then its the latter.
The latter is about £30, the former under a tenner. So start with the former if I were you and see if it fits !! (I seem to remember Whitenemesis bought the former and had to modify it for his facelift car, so hopefully the former is right for your pre-facelift car)

Richard

IIRC I had to change the connector so it would fit the socket in the OCP and Richard had to change the pin-out as there had been a wiring change at some point, not obvious from the wiring diagram!

light sensor to RL sensor

I have the same screen and light sensor as PRC above (4 wires connector)
My car is a w203 late 2006, can someone clarifier for me if i need to change the screen or just a combined RLS with a new loom will do .
And what are the parts number needed?
Thank you

Vince:o

Thank you to Richard & Whitenemesis for the excellent help & advice.
I will speak to MB dealer....

You'll need a new screen that has 4 more lenses (for the rain sensor) 2 on either side of the 2 light sensor lenses.

Thanks PRC
So I did understood right in this forum
The reason that I was not sure about the replacement of the sreen is because my previous w203 2002 had rain and light sensor with only two lenses on the screen excatly as my present car:confused:
So maybe if I get a combined RLS for a w2003 2002 by giving the VIN of my previeous w203 , maybe, maybe this will work without replacing the screen !!

Thanks PRC

I am not sure this is correct.
My understanding is that the pre- facelift car had separate LS & RS (as mine; 2 lens LS & separate 4 lens RS) and the post facelift(a 2006 would be) had the combined sensor with 10 lenses(2 LS & 8 RS) visible on the outside screen as per Whitenemesis' screen.

I,m confused as much as you are.
but I'm 200% sure that my previuos w203 had 2 lenses only for RLS

My screen on pre-facelift 2003 CL203(ie similar to w203) has only 2 lenses visible from the outside- this is the rain sensor.
This may have been what you could see externally, particularly if your previous w203 was an older car.
Adjacent to these 2 lenses is a bluey rectangular patch which you can see on prc's screen above. On the reverse side of myscreen (under the plastic cover; where the blue area is) are 4 lenses bonded to the screen which cannot be seen normally from the outside- this is the Rain sensor (prc did not have these, despite having the blue window).

The facelift car has 10 lenses clearly visible externally. I think this is the screen you would want so that it blends best with the facelift operating/loom system in your (newer) car

Hope this clarifies ??

Update on this:

MB dealer said this retrofit not possible as there is no retrofit instruction document on WIS!
rain sensor A2108205710 £119 + vat  at MB dealer
wire loom A2034404210 £24.10 +vat
wire loom A2035409006 £6.65 +vat

MB dealer said I would need both looms - this their assumption as nothing to indicate one or other on EPC !!
If there was no MB Club forum it would be very sad indeed; to simply rely upon the MB dealers for advice & support would be most unsupporting!

Fortunately found a new sensor(only one though!) through Mercman for approx half price inc vat/p&p :D , so its on the way.
On Richards advice, will try £6.65 loom 1st which is in stock (other would need ordering from Germany) at MB dealer

Just checked the light dome/opc which does have empty sockets, although part number(A203820 2501/7D43) differs from that of fuzzers'(A203820 1001/7D43) above, so hopefully will still fit!

Well, I got a freebie cable from an 02 coupe being scrapped, which fitted perfectly, so everything is in, but...
Nothing has changed, even when raining- wiper still just does timed intermittent- no variability.
So, is the sensor no good, is my car incompatible, or does it need coding to wake up the sensor??
Can anyone help, please?
Many thanks, Matt

It needs coding to tell the car the sensor is fitted and it needs to be adapted to the screen, i.e. it needs to be told the type and colour screen

Thanks Wizard, that's some releif- hopefully all is not wasted!

Finally got this working- enabled by non STAR machine at local independent. Worked when window had external condensation on this morning & stopped when cleared :)

For info, the auto wipers not as good as newer editions in that when left on, there is a single wipe when turning on ignition even if no rain. This does not happen on B-class with auto wipers. Easy to get round this by leaving off when not raining!
Still worth it for varying the speed when it is raining & not having to keep adjusting stalk.

Also same non-STAR machine enabled UK mode deletion, so can now select permanent temp display in cluster.

Have a facelift early 2005 C270 estate. I have light sensor but no rain sensor activated. I attach photos of the sensor, lenses etc.
Sensor 2038205226 (4 wires)
Lenses A203 820 1511

I also have the Hella codes Sensor 5DF008073 Lenses 9XB744 657-00

There appear to be multiple lenses on the screen and the sensor has a number of "chips" visible.

Can anyone tell me how I can upgrade to rain sensors??

In the OWNERS manual it tells you that unless it is raining there is no need to have the auto-wipers on.

The system is not calibrated for dry rain. Only wet rain.

1) Find a broken windscreen with the rain sensor bracket on it - or purchase a new windscreen

2) Fit the alternative bracket on or fit the new windscreen

3) Modify the factory wiring

4) Attach the new sensor to the new bracket or new windscreen.

Both the bracket and the wiring need to be upgraded.
