W211 E Class SBC Pump

Ah shucks Red. I was waiting for the boys at Kwik Fit to confirm this when he went in for his oil change.

My '03 (registered 01/01/03), 131k mileage E270 has also just come up with this error...took it to an independent who suspected the SBC. This was latterly confirmed by Merc main dealer in the South West.

Unfortunately they are refusing to replace the unit, or offer any contribution or support at all. The reasons quoted are age (6 weeks over the fabled 10yr warranty), mileage (is 131k really that high for a Merc?) and non-main dealer servicing (not sure how that makes any difference to the SBC unit)...

...so am left with the choice of £1,600 repair on a car worth £4k-£5k (when fixed) or buy a BMW!

Not sure how this situation is influenced by the VOSA recall on the SBC but doesn't seem to be helping!

Any advice/thoughts gratefully received but would be a real shame to scrap such a nice car with lots of extras (Distronic, Sat Nav, etc, etc) for the sake of having exceeded the number of brake actuations! Presumably this is going to become a very common issue now for owners of w211 Mercs...

I think it will become a big issue for remaining non-replaced pre-facelift W211s.

Does your independent offer any cheaper alternatives? I believe the unit can be re-conditioned:

Mercedes Sensotronic brake-by-wire SBC system

If this isn't an option - I suppose it comes down to how well the car is running otherwise. If it is a reliable non-lemon, it might be worth getting it replaced on the basis you could change and have a or some big issues with whatever you buy.

On the other hand, I've heard replacement SBC pumps not lasting anything like the one the car came with.

I've no idea what I will do with mine but it is so quiet in operation - I can't imagine it being a problem for a very long time.

Thanks for the response JohnEBoy, and the link. I've already asked one 'reconditioner' what they actually do to see if I think it's safe so I'll contact BBA Reman as well - a cheaper solution would certainly be helpful if safe.

Not to be negative but I didn't notice anything at all, noise, reduced brake power/responsiveness/etc before the message came up...so just seems to come out of the blue when you've hit the magic number...

They will be too busy changing the discs / pads / exhaust / tyres that all cars that visit there seem to need.

Oh and the DPF / CAT / A/C and whatever other ****e they can fabricate...

I maybe able to re programme it. Dies it come up with "service brake visit workshop"?

quick update decided t o book it in for filter and oil at a local garage , 54 pounds , more expensive but peace of mind .

I took mine into a main dealer in 2011 and spoke about the SBC unit as it was a little bit loud.

They said it wasn't at the end of it's life but they updated the firmware and it did improve it a lot - the update also increased the counter limit I believe.

I don't like the idea of 'just resetting' but in the case where the unit is performing as it should - it seems a bit needless to replace...

Thanks for the reply Olly - I tried to call but phone was engaged.

Have decided to bite the bullet and get the SBC replaced. Spoke to BBA Reman (as did my independent) and I think they can fix/re-manufacture various issues with these units but not when they reach their threhold limit. Would also have to send off from Exeter to Kent...which isn't helpful as I need my car!

Also not 100% confident about re-programming (which presumably removes the limit?) as although the limit seems a slightly odd concept as others have said it is there for a reason...and my brakes did feel a little spongey when I took it in (could be paranoia!)...

...so who knows what the best decision is but with an 18 month baby I'm playing safe.

Thanks for everyone's input, it is genuinely appreciated.

I had a shock today when MBenz Glos&Chelt phoned to say the cost of a replacement pump will be £1600, I called MB Milton Keynes to be told this part is Not covered with a life warranty.
Tomorrow, I shall be exploring options, this is one can of worms that is about to have the lid taken off, I have to say I am very disappointed.

2003 E class 270 cdi with independent history, although I fail to see the significance of franchised history regarding this part, that has an end of life, but no end of life warranty.

Your car came with a 3 year parts warranty, which it has outlived.

Why do you expect the manufacturer to provide support after the warranty has expired?

Yes, this indeed an odd situation. When I bought my car in March 2011 it came with 3 months.

I took it to MB to have a recall done in July IIRC and at the same time - I asked about SBC.

They upgraded the firmware to resolve the noise issue I was having with it which increased the counter from 150,000 to 300,000 I'm sure they said it was.

Anyway, I said how much would that be, their EXACT words were "it's free because the SBC is covered by a lifetime warranty".

I said it doesn't have a warranty and I didn't buy it from MB.

She maintained the same line.

So this part of the car SHOULD BE COVERED WITH A LIFETIME WARRANTY but of course now MB realise how much it costs - they've moved the goalposts.

Quel surprise.

My "counter" was reset on a 2003 e class when 9 years old. My understanding was that it was a guarantee up to 10 years old. Maybe Bosch will only stand a claim from MB who weren't really paying for them for this period i.e. the claim was passed down the line?
To honest who would expect a warranty beyond 10 years and how much would say a servo/master cylinder combo cost for a conventional mercedes.

brake fluid change

hi my indy has a snapon will that be ok for a brake fluid change on my e class or does it have to be a star system to do this please

I seen quite few SBC Pumps for sale on ebay, price range from £250-£350.
Can second hand part be used if original fails or is it just main dealer £1600 job with new part?
