Hello

I have an 2003 E320 NTG1 Comand that I recently updated with the W211 589 13 22 00 (taken from Merc Service site). After the download, everything works ok, except the Navigation and Maps ( I have a blue screen). My new firmware is 30/2006 V21.090 now.

The nav on the dash is still ok, it still displays the direction Im driving, so I think:wallbash: maybe the navigation on the comand is not activated. I tried using different discs of the same software in case I burnt it wrong as well. Radio, DVD, Tel all still work fine.

To "try" and fix the problem, I downloaded the W211 589 14 22 00 and tried to further update but just as I pressed 1+3+8 and inserted the disc, it gave an error message "Wrong Variant".

I am out of options and now desperate to get it fixed, even contemplated comand suicide by downgrading it, but havent taken that route (would it work?)

Please help me get my Sat Nav, my last resort would be to pay for hours of diagnosis at Merc Service.

Many thanks in advance

You say "in case I burnt it wrong"

Did you put this 'burnt' disc in the Comand head unit or the Navigation DVD in the boot?

The Nav DVD are notorious for not 'liking' copied/home burnt Discs

He updated the headunit firmware.

Try removing power to the nav processor in the boot to reset it or remove the relevant fuse in the fuse box.

I put it in the command head as per directions on the Merc Tool site and used a good cd brand.

Besides removing the fuse, how else can power be removed from the nav in the boot?

I removed the Navigation fuse, left it out for about 20mins, but the problem persists. Still getting a blue screen on the Nav and Maps. Im open to more suggestions

Are you sure you didnt just remove the fuse for the Comand unit. You can unplug the power from the back of the nav processor.

Other things to try are eject and reload nav disc make sure it is clean underneath.

Has the NAV drive (firmware and DVD maps) also been updated?

I had the same issue last year, I pulled every audio/tv related fuse including the AGW and brought them online one at a time each time turning the ignition off and adding power to an additional MOST connection. Eventually it got there and I had all devices back online.

I removed 3rd fuse from the bottom according to the fuse map, which states its correct for the NAV. I have also tried cleaning the disc, still blue screen. I dont this its the map cd in the boot, i presume the issue is with the Comand due to the firmware update.

**Regarding removing power from the Nav processor, is it straight forward or will I need a screwdriver??**

SavMan: I only updated the command with the hope of getting newer maps. So no, I did not update dvd maps in the boot, only the comand firmware. Regarding pulling out the fuses one at a time, please kindly elaborate. Do I take each fuse out one at a time and time ignition on and off each time? Shoudl I wait the recommended 15mins before replacing them?

On the dash, between the speedo, the nag still shows its on and provides me with the direction I am driving in. So could this likely mean it powers up, but not synched with the command?

Took the relevant fuses out, still no luck. Shall I try a sledgehammer (only kidding)

Headunit firmware update doesnt update the maps. You have to buy a map disc to do that, the map disc goes in the nav processor in the boot. Nav processor firmware updates are on the nav disc.

Have you tried driving around after re-setting?

Yes, I'm aware of the different functions, ie, the nav processor and the comand, I tried updating the comand unit with the hope of buying an up to date maps DVD.

I have have tried driving around after reset, even tried updating while driving as well.

Is it a hopeless case?

Can Mercedes flash the system and reinstall the firmware?

Is it possible to flush the comand and restore to factory condition and 1st edition it came it

There is a chap on here called Richard who is knowledgeable in these matters... might be worth seeing what he suggests once he's seen this?

It must be possible to recover from it I would have thought but I doubt many have gone through this on here - except those who've said.

My Solution (the long story)

Ok, later this afternoon, I went to Mercedes. The sales guy, Merc Brentford, wasnt helpful. They wanted to charge me for one hours diagnosis which is 140GBP + VAT with no guarantee for a fix, so it would have turned out to be more. I would have prefered to talk to the Tech guys instead of the suits to explain the issue but they wouldnt let me!! He kept on going on about the Maps dvd i needed to buy that goes in the Trunk. I left in sadness. I had researched the eB auction site for second units and the cheapest was about 200 pounds, so I figured this would be my solution.

When I got home, I decided to go into destruction mode, try everything and anything even if I killed it.

I reinstalling the firmware a few times, driving, parked, ejecting before it has completed whole install, but it failed. One time, the unit failed and wouldnt go off. Luckily I reinstalled it successfully, but the Nav wasnt there.

I tried to enter Engineering Mode, but couldnt get in using Serv+ Hangup+Mute.. I tried many combinations until I stumbled upon a chap in Malaysia who had his Comand country code wrngly configured. He suggested using;

Service, going to Settings, clicking Language (softkey), then holding down all three of the following ONE by ONE in the sequence:

Hangup + Audio + Diagonal Upper Left Arrow

Needless to say, I was happy when I got in..but under devices, Nav wasnt listed and it wasnt bringing it back. Im a moment of desperation and I began erasing the errors and reseting everything I thought wouldnt do much harm. I cant recall everything I did, but i reset a few things.

I reinstalled Firmware W211 589 13 22 00, and presto, it worked!!! I thanked God many times and vowed not to touch it again.. (for now)

Thank you everyone for your contributions and indulging me. I appreciate all your help and hearing me vent.

Glad you fixed it.
You sound like you had a similar situation and outcome in that I spent a couple of days trying to rectify including time on the phone with the guys at comandonline. Eventually after several reinstalls, changing menu options and pulling everything out and plugging back in one by one. I managed to get it back operational but could probably not replicate.

I said exactly the same words - never again!

This needs Star Diagnosis to fix it. Go see Alfie at Comand.co.uk

Richard

(Edit, To expand on what I said above, the coding needs re-doing correctly, sound like your changes in engineering mode and then the re-install has re-initialised some nvram somewhere. - there are a number of different coding errors (such as MOST bus ring order) that can cause the symptoms you saw after the firmware update, there may of course be other things causing it too!)
