Hi Chaps,

This weekend I have had to have the dreaded B service with air and fuel filters done on my E320. Given that I had managed to maintain the full MB service history all the way up to 99k I wanted to see if I could continue.

I got two quotes from local to me MB dealers. Coventry quoted £562 and Birmingham £620. I asked the service department at Coventry if it was okay to supply my own parts for the service which they were happy to do.

I brought the oil (10 litres), air filters and fuel filter from MB of Newcastle for about £80 in total. I then used DEY Merc to fit the air and fuel filters for me and update the digital service book. This cost me £85 inclusive of parts.

When I called MB of Coventry to book in, I mentioned that the air and fuel filters had been recently done, they agreed as they could see it logged on the DSB. So it was just a B service needed with me supplying the oil. Once the service was done, they dealer supplied me with all my paperwork highlighting that the rust and Mobilo life cover was extended again until the next service!

So all in all, I have maintained the FMBSH (with some cheating involved!) and kept my Mobilo and rust warranty without paying as much through the nose as I thought I would!

MB Cov B service exc. oil = £220
Oil cost = £32
DEY Merc labour = £40
Air & fuel filters = £45
Total cost = £337 vs the original quote of £562!

It's worth having a look around in these hard times to see where you can save, it seems the dealers are more open than they used to be with the oil supply etc.

I was going to put the saving I have made away to cover the next service but it would seem the missus has already spent it!

The parts prices from the dealer are lower than I would have expected – I thought the fuel filter alone was a chunky price?

I find it odd that the dealers don’t seem to be interested in competing for this work. A few years ago I had B Service, ATF change and some other bits and pieces done by my local dealer for £430 and even that was £30 more than another member paid at the same dealer for virtually the same work. But last couple of times I’ve used them it’s been a massive battle to get any movement at all.

Very much my experience also.
At the least I supply my own oil, seems to reduce the bill by £100- £150.

I thought the same too Rory! The oil was a steal at £32 for 10 litres, especially when the dealer is charging £9 plus vat per litre in the service cost!

The fuel filter was the earlier type, there is one that costs £75 odd so I got luck there.

My local dealer told me it would invalidate mobilo if I supplied any oem parts for servicing even oil, logically it doesn't make any sence but I guess it does to them as they can charge me their inflated prices.

I guess their out to rip me, so I'll look further a field for servicing within MB, there doesn't seem to be any rules, they make it up as they go along in my experience so far. Although when I had BMW they had no problem with me supplying the parts fluids they just serviced the car and continued the warranty albeit a dodgy corrosion warranty.

My car has full MB history now I'm beginning to doubt is it really worth anything against a good indy?

Did they make a mistake, or something?

I think that's even cheaper than the Vauxhall MB approved stuff that some people rave about, and it's half the Costco price for Mobil-1.

Cost with us using genuine Mercedes Parts & Oil - £280 including pollen filter too ;)

Mercland, do you use 5W30 or 5W40 oil?

Hi Jay,

I agree that independents are much cheaper, but the difference gets me my breakdown cover for free so it works out very similar!

Did you get MB to reset the air filters on star after you had them fitted, I recently replaced my filters but didn't notice much of a difference in the car until I booked it in and had it reset. The car car felt more responsive afterwards. from memory cost about £30 plus the dreaded.

That's another reason I've gone away from MB how ridiculous is it that you have to have a reset after changing something as simple as air filters, madness.

I need to move - you're way cheaper than the indie's around me!

I checked a couple (Chester / Wirral area) at my last service and there wasn't much in it.
