Wanted Merc Cosworth or R129 500SL

Yeah a phone call wouldn't hurt to see if he's ever had the kit off etc!!

Why not? Can't do any harm. It gets my vote, well only based on the advert. I'd view it if in the market, for sure.

how do you know it sold?

Someone offered £1800 but that doesn't mean the offer was accepted. I wouldn't be surprised if that reappears for sale soon.

It looks surprisingly clean for 180k I have to agree.

It was £1795 or offer but probably sold at full asking I imagine ... Looks like he had a lot of offers. I would have bought without a seconds thought at that price.... Typical... Any other day I would have spotted it.

It could be an absolute bargain. Then again it could be an absolute financial nightmare.

Either way, did you go and view the car? If not then you are entering car roulette.

There would have been no risk with this car at all.

If you think about it, what is the worse that could happen? If there were multiple expensive issues I would sell as needing work for the same price or part break/scrap and make some profit/break even.
Had the car gods been shining a grand or two over the summer spent might have been all it needed to make a very nice car.
Higher miles means its been used and may have had a whole raft of new parts already fitted (speculating of course)
It's tricky to tell from photos but it looks pretty good to me at a distance and would have been more than worth the risk.
Sadly it was the only day I didnt check ebay and not surprisingly sold within hours.
Cars of less than a couple of grand I dont even bother viewing unless they are round the corner.
I have dropped the seller (who was including a warranty also?!) a note, so you never know ... Hopefully he has attracted the usual ebay knobs and the sale will fall through!
Its so refreshing to see a car at a sensible price..

173k miles! I suppose even if you bought it and it all went horribly wrong, you could always break it for spares and get your money back.

Exactly ... And if well maintained thats not too high a mileage anyway?
Was a no brainer.

Didnt hear back from the seller so assume its gone ...

Found another sl500 at £2k for a 96 which seemed interesting. Left a message and an email yesterday and no reply.
Still hunting and leaning towards the SL
Please post any SL500s you spot below :)

One last shout out for a SL before I press the button on one ... Anything out there? (Sensible priced please)

I'd say any R129 that costs around 2 grand is going to be a dog rough POS that will give you little in the way of satisfaction & plenty of expensive problems.

Not buying that one ... The price went up £3k overnight ... Dealers internet account was hacked apparently ... That old chestnut!

Yep! No doubt in my mind about that either, I'd have the same concerns for any sub 5 grand one's too. A 4 grand 2.5-16 looks almost sensible compared to a 4 grand R129.

Let's see what I come up with? I think as long as it's got no rust, good service history and we'll looked after I won't go too far wrong? Especially if big things have been changed. Plenty out there with new hoods, suspension etc
Parts are cheap, simple mechanics and if needed plenty being broken?

Ah, that's a good positive attitude just hope it's realistic. A nice R129 is a hell of car.

In discussion with three sellers now so hopefully close. One is York though which is miles away! Don't mind travelling though for the right car.

Parts for 129s are cheap?

Really?

There's a spares or repair late SL500 on ebay at the moment that looks interesting.

It looks like the aftermath of a woman scorned and has been daubed with paint stripper.

Last I checked it was at £300 so could be a bargain once you factor in a full respray.
