I have just started a forum for hauliers and drivers of HGV's.
How can I put it into search engines to attract more members?
Any ideas?

Graeme, on the browser toolbar (IE6?) Click View>Source and you will see examples of meta tags.
eg <meta name="keywords" content="MB, UK, Mercedes-Benz, etc.....

Am running on AOL software ATM
Thanks.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is a business in its own right; it can get very complicated.

Clearly, the main site you need to submit to it Google; submit it here . Not saying that will do any good, but it's a start. Crucial thing is to have as many links to your site as possible ... like if you posted on other boards, you could put a link to the haulier forum in your sig .......

If you want to blow your mind, have a look here.

Google ignore metatags as it was being abused; incoming links are the king ....

Google is a fully automated search engine that employs robots known as "spiders" to crawl the web and find sites for inclusion in the Google index. Since this process does not involve human editors, it is NOT necessary to submit your site to Google in order to be included in our index. In fact, the vast majority of sites listed are not manually submitted for inclusion.

Google does not accept payment for inclusion (known as "paid inclusion") of sites in our index, nor for improving the rank of sites in our results. We do offer advertising opportunities adjacent to our results, which are always clearly labelled "Sponsored Links." The method by which we find pages and rank them as search results is determined by many different factors, including the PageRank technology developed by our founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

Of course, there are others; Yahoo and Lycos others that spring to mind; they both have links where you can add your site.

Thanks matey.
I can see a googlebot all over the place when I am in the Admin panel, but have added the site again as you say.
Will try a few more sites in a moment.
Might put the URL in my sig too to boost it a bit more. (If that's allowed ;) )

HaulersClub Forums. You must register to reply.(It's FREE)
Helps to have the same spelling of the name everywhere as well ;)

I'd get the hauliersclub.co.uk domain name (just checked, it is *currently* available) *NOW* and point it at the forum. If you want, I can get it for you at cost (couple of quid a year), or ask Maff. hauliersclub.com is also available.

Was thinking that Graeme. Would be a good idea.

You can also submit your site to a search engine to trawl and list.

There's tons of websites that do it for free - just search for "free search engine listing" on google/yahoo/etc .....

Note it can take a few months for it to be processed and trawled through - as you can imagine they get thousands per day.

Lots of the freebies above will hit 20-odd engines.

You can pay for more and you can pay for placement, although it's never guaranteed.

I don't think metatags would work here, as you are simply using a template forum, which means you can't edit/amend the metatags. Note I might be wrong, as I think it varies from site to site.

Ideally, you'd have a front page - textual introduction and overview, containing all the key words that you'd want someone to search for to find you. And then add these same words to the metatags.

There are loads of free site submitters that will do the work for you, if you can put up with the monthly or weekly newsletter (or supply an email ad you dont use much to filter this out) Give it about a month and most top search engines will have added you automatically.... some will do 40 sites at once, like when you do your insurance quotes.

Yep Ideally getting the Hauliersclub.co.uk domain then making a simple home page with all the keywords and then either automatic redirection or a link to forum.

I know whe seraching with yahoo and searching for my Mercedes queries I can almost guarantee there will be a few link it the top 5 to this site. Infact yahoo finds posts for the site better than what the forum search does.

Hi m8

Just reading your post on SEO.

Links are the key. Get loads and loads of links.

Links are gold to websites.

Do not worry about SEO on the site as it use's Google site map and will always have a Google bot on after ever update.

Meta tags are important but not behold and end of every thing, you may as well forget about them at the free forum.

The way we are going it has to be links and content lots and lots of keyword rich content.

Well grav. I came to the conclueshion that phhp is

So i have got vBulletin cheap really. Much Much nicer now i can start to really work on it.

Note: if any one wants to have a play on v3.5 feel free i will not be building it for a day or two, took me ages to find the open command now up and running.
