What Have You Done To Your Merc Today?

We had the car cleaned yesterday and it was looking fantastic ready to take it to North Devon for the Easter werkend. Our original plan of setting off at 0600 was thwarted by having to do something unplanned before setting off, so instead we set off at 1200 to join the bank holiday party on the M5!

It started raining 2 miles in to the journey and rained on and off throughout, however the weather was definitely getting worse the further south we travelled. The last 60 miles or so were pretty bad with fog, very heavy rain, lots of flooding of very dirty running off pretty much every field. Filthy car!

The traffic was shocking, Judging by the M5 I think the whole country is in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall this weekend. We managed a heady 24 mph average speed over the course of 140 miles travelled on the M5. Such a shame the incredible weather has broken before the long weekend.

Something stupid is what I did!!

As you may remember I changed my radiator a couple of weeks back....no issues since....until yesterday.

Popped into Bognor M & S (yeah I know.....Im doing all right!).....and returned to my car to find most of the coolant under the car.....visions of my new but cheap radiator having failed filled my head....but no. In fact it was my fault.....the rad hoses are the sort with metal ends and held in by wire clips....it looks as if I had not seated one of them correctly and after a couple of drives it had shaken free. I cant see its anything else it could be because when I re-attached it i could not even lever it out with a screw driver so it must have been fitter error! Having popped it back on in the car park that left the issue of coolant. So now my car is running on a few litres of M&S finest still mineral water!!.....this will be re[placed at work today if its quiet....and I now have new hose seals so they will go on too. Its all fun!!

Reminds me of the time the water pump started leaking badly in one of my 190Es , lost a lot of coolant and temp gauge rising , desperately needed coolant .

Late night in Glasgow no filling stations in sight , but there was a Tesco open , so bought 2x 5L bottles of Highland Spring , on seeing me topping up in the car park this lady remarked " well that's a pampered car !" .

I looked at the Highland Spring......but they only had sparkling.....didnt seem like a good idea!!

So just now I have drained out the M&S still water.....(I tried it......tastes a bit odd now so it wont be going back into the bottle!) and replaced it with the correct 50/50 mix anti freeze and replaced the two main radiator pipe O rings.....it was a rather tighter fit to get the pipes back in....so that's good thing. I also double checked the retaining clip were in the correct groove....TBH they don't have quite the grip of the original Merc ones....and I still have them so I might swap them over when I get home....don't want them coming lose again!!

Tried a bit of Yum interior cleaner. It works.

Also ordered some new centre caps and another bottle of Rapid Detailer. With the hard water here I really need it.

Stepson set off from Preston at 5am and was at Butlins in Somerset by 11am. Just shows how important set off time is

It makes all the difference, especially on bank holidays!

Took the E250 for a 30 minute drive to Cassiobury Park in Watford for the little one to do some trampolining… first drive in over a week and I’m still learning how it handles and its width on country lanes 🤣
I’m amassing the service items in-house so far I’ve got the required 5.5 litres of MB 229.5 oil, MB oil filter and a Bosch engine air filter.
I will do the service in the next couple months, after I grab 4 x spark plugs (A0041595803) and maybe a cabin filter too.

Ok..... so the accused is offering up a defence for his stupidity! When I got home last night it was still seeping.... On closer inspection I realised that the wire clips that came with the new radiator were a tad too thick and were not sitting in the grooves correctly. Luckily I kept the old genuine Mercedes ones... they are noticeably thinner and and slightly different shape. The difference was obvious when fitted.... they snapped into place much more positively and go further round the pipe. No amount of heaving could free the pipe and they stayed dry over night.... so hopefully sorted now.

Removed the broken section of my front grille, I found most of the plastic bits inside the front bumper. Stuck them all back together with super glue ,best I could . Alot more secure now , ready for my 110 mile trip in the morning to Yorkshire. 🦌. . Located a used genuine mb grille £45 . Just gotta sort out that cracked headlight lens now.

What a result 👌

Did you get cold feet over the Pan-Am Grille? (I’m still undecided 🤪)

I might still get one , I've noticed the glc grill has mainly holes , the clips are moulded into the bumper. Which makes things a bit better . I looked at it today and with a long screwdriver you only need press on 2 clips on those air scoops , all the rest are pressable using your fingers. I've always thought the Pana grill makes a Merc look like a BMW tbh. I'm just terrible when it comes to spending and decisions tbf . 🤣

The main reason I’d like the Pan Grille is because I can opt for the gloss black version (my GLC has the Night Pack with lots of black trim) so I think it’d go well.

It would probably work then. If I get one it'll be gloss black also , but with chrome ring and star. 👍👍Screenshot_20250420-064857.Chrome.png

The weather wasn’t bad over the weekend - raining heavily overnight but staying relatively dry in the day - but was hellish as we came back up the M5 this evening.

We took the most direct route possible and thanks to bank holiday traffic or average speed was just 33 mph over a distance of 230 miles, over which 220 miles are motorway or NSL!

Bought my first ever “Lube Cube” and used some for oilservice. Left pattern air filter that vendor had fitted, as it was clean and only has 9k miles on it. Fitted cabin filter (as opposed to replaced, as there wasn’t one in the housing!) Bought some 17” alloys (used). Anybody know if the wheel bolts are different for steel/alloy wheels? (OEM Vito Sport alloys) W447

I hoovered mine with the proper mains powered one, not just the hand held. Got a lot of crap out of the carpet and the various nooks and crannies.
