What is behind the nearside rear lamp on a W211 E55

Hi

I have just taken out the N/S/R lamp from my E55k to clean it out. When I removed it I found a ''cream coloured spongy case'' with something inside it, from this runs a grey pipe to a black plastic ''box'' can anyone tell me what all this stuff is? The main reason I ask is because the grey hose was split................ I have now fixed the split and reconnected everything. Just wondered what it was so I know what I have just fixed!

i think thats a junction for some vacuum pipes
