Hello all. im new to this site. please help me. i just bought a mercedes e220 cdi 2005 car. its done about 72000 and all serviced by main dealers mercedes.
my concern is that the steering wheel seems to be heavy. i have driven other cars of similar sort and the steering wheel on mine compared to those is heavy.

I am guessing its the power steering fluid that probably needs topping up. if yes please tell me where its located. i checked the engine and on the right side of the engine, there was a cover on it, i removed the covered and there were few bottles and one bottle's lid had a dipstick attached to it, is that the one for power steering fluid.

if not please show me with pictures if possible where it will be and what else needs topping up or doing so the steering wheel can be made lighter.

many thanks for your help in advance.

Yeah, remove the top right hand engine cover and the PAS reservoir is black with the dipstick attached to the cap. Check it with the engine not running :thumb:

Thanks for your help. I have attached below a pic of my engine bay after removing 2 covers. One from top of the engine and one next to it.
I think i have found the powe steering reservoir. The one circled in red, is that the power steering reservoir? It does have a stick attched to it reading min max etc.
Also is there any power steering filter inside it. If yes how can I change it.

If this isnt the reservoir then where is it. Someone told me that there is power steering codes that I need to have a looked at. Whats that about. Sorry for too many questions thanks in advance

Yes that is the power steering reservoir. As already said it should have a dipstick attached to the cap. These usually have 2 marks on them, one marked Cold and the other marked Hot. Use the Cold mark, in a morning, to check it before driving the car or the Hot mark if checking after a journey of several miles. If it needs topping up be sure to use the correct fluid. (MB 345.0 Hydraulic Fluid - A 001 989 2403) Or an equivalent that meets MB spec. 345.0 Do Not Overfill

Can't help with the power steering codes, but I think it's highly unlikely, unless someone is suggesting that a fault with low fluid level would throw up a fault code. :dk:

The item you have circled in green is the engine oil filter housing.

Thanks very much for your info grumpyoldgit.
Very informative info there. Do you think it could also be the ball joint or anything like that which might be causing the sheavy steering wheel problem.
Would changing the tyre do any good. Thanks

Doubtful on the ball joint, but when was the last service done? Have you checked your tyre pressures as DSM10000 suggested? What sort of tread depth is left on the tyres, if they are very low it could make a difference. Do you know if they are standard MB wheels on it.

If the tyres are good and power steering fluid is ok, (correct level and no leaks) it may be worth getting a local Merc Indie Specialist to just check the steering over.

Edit: It may also be worth getting the front wheel alignment checked. Any signs of scrubbing on the front tyres?

I bought this merc recently. Tire presure is all good. It has full service history. Last service done about 20000 miles ago. Speaking of the tires driver side tyre seems to be newer then the passener side tyre. It does have more tread on it (on the driver side).
I had full tracking done by kwik fit . It was oyt a bit they sortes it out byt the probkem of heavy steering is still there
Thanks

Hello. No problem is still there. I had it checked by 2 mechanics they put it on a ramp. They both said everything it was fine and thatbthey are meant to be heavy. Ball joint, steering rack pump all is okay. Fluid all topped up.
Im startinv to think could it be the speed sensitive solenoid or some sort of steering coding which may need updating

I dont know actually. How much would mercedes charge to diagnose it?
I was thinking of going going to the mercedes main dealers and ask them to check it and hopefully that way I can atleast find out what the problem is.

hey CDI-E220-2005,

I am not sure if your problem was solved. But I have bought 2007 merc and I am having the same issue. I have driven Audi, VW and BMW (talking about german cars) but nothing was like this.

Was it sorted for you or the issue still there?
