Which Engine Oil?

That reads very similar to a description of ZDDP. Is Monolec really much different to the usual polar anti wear additives used by other manufacturers.

24.2% less wear - any figures for ZDDP?
Compatible with all emissions equipment.
When used in oils for diesel engines, API CK-4 rating.

Monolec is only part of the package - it's when an engine that has been run exclusively on LE is opened up and the absolute cleanliness is observed that the overall quality becomes apparent.

Alas, the latest MB specs are not awarded - because MB insist on being given the formulation details before granting their spec. Lubrication Engineers will not release that information so no specs given.

It must work though. https://www.lelubricants.com/lit/testimonials/8531 Charles Fowler.pdf
50% + drain interval extension and 200,000 + troublefree miles on each car.

Fuchs makes great products. I use their prosucts since long time :)

Pro sucks !

Fuchs , yes very much the engine oil specialist.

Group 5 defines the involvement .

I have also seen some tests of the original Mercedes oil. It had similar results as Fuchs oil. Petronas suppoused to be good is well. The reality is you have to change the oil at least one a year or maximum 15 000km

Isn't the MB-branded oil made by Petronas?

It is hard to say - I think it might be Fuchs, Petronas is only sposoring their F1 team. From what I know the gearbox oil was made with Fuchs - probably we will not know as there is no official info who is making the oil for them. Looking at the tests it works pretty good and you can compare original oil to Fuchs quality. In my family we are using Fuchs oil since 10 years and we never had any problems. Recently to W215 CL600 I have bought an original 0W-40 AMG High Performence Engine Oil from Mercedes - as I have got really good price with Mercedes-Club discounts etc. For 10L of oil I have paid 80EUR after all discounts I've got it.

A tip for anyone looking for the recommended MB oil spec for their vehicle and has the "Mercedes Me" adaptor - log into your account: choose "parts & accessories": choose "oil finder": = Answer

Hi guys,

I'm getting very confused. I gave a 2011 C180 CGI. The Mercedes Me page lists 5 different oils.

Two are 5W-30 229.51 & 229.52. A 0W-40 229.5 and two 5W-40 229.5 & 229.3.

A Mercedes dealer recommended 229.51 5W-30 but what is the difference in this and the 229.52?

Your advice is most appreciated.

Lee

229.5 is intended for petrol engines. 229.51 and 229.52 are low saps oils primarily intended for use in diesels with a particle filters but MB also approve them for petrol engines. 229.52 is the later spec so arguably better oil. Frankly any of them will be fine but my preference is for a 229.5 5W40.

Glad you said that. I'm looking at Petronas Syntium 3000e 5W-40.

Thanks for the info. I've spent most of my working life in car dealership parts departments and have never found it so difficult to find a suitable oil.

Not sure why preference as it is the lesser of the three .

Looking at the chart, this makes sense.

The after treatment compatibility is required mainly for the DPF, and the prevention of oil thickening due to oxidation is also a result of the higher combustion temperatures required for DPF regeneration, so these two features are probably not applicable for petrol engine, but I can definitely see from the chart that 229.52 offers improved fuel economy over 229.5 while still offering the same level of wear protection.

Just to reiterate that this is correct and the current official advice from MB is that for petrol engines 229.5 is recommended and 229.51/229.52 are permissible, though you can obviously prefer the latter to the former.

Want more protection .

MB oil specs aren't the best manufacturer specs !

VW 504.00 507.00 .

Normally in my w212 OM651 CDI, I use Total Quartz Ineo MC3 5w30 , which matches MB spec 229.52.
And for the Skoda's in the Family I use Castrol Edge Titanium LL, which meets specs VW504 00 and VW507 00,.do you think that I could use the same Castrol in the Merc?

Absolutely , in fact that spec has a few higher oil performance perameters of anti wear and lower ash than 229.52 .
