There seems to be plenty of activity on ebay regarding the sale of key fobs, I was of the understanding these couldn't be reprogrammed and the ids of the people bidding seem to be specialist key geeks. Do they know something I dont ? lets face it,wouldn't be difficult !!!!

If your key is damaged , you can swap the internals into an undamaged fob.

In general they cannot be reprogrammed. I have heard that a few specialists have managed to do it but it is not easy and can involve messing with the cars electronic systems - never a good idea.

I know when I bought mine it had to cone from Germany. Programmed with my cars details. When I plugged it into the car it took a few seconds as it "talked" to the car and synchronised itself. I personally wouldn't want to risk an eBay

I imported my car from Japan, and while the vehicle itself was immaculate, it only came with one key, and that was in a horrible state - taped around to hold it together, so blade wouldn't close and was sort of fixed in the open position, scratched, dirty, etc. I ordered a new key at the Mercedes-Benz Nassau, and it took four weeks to arrive from Germany (and cost me $520), but I also bought a key case off eBay, and transferred the insides of the original key into it (actually I bought two different ones - one was a complete crap, couldn't hold it together with spring loaded, the other was perfect). Now I have a 'new' spare key, with everything working perfectly. In fact, I feel that original key requires less precision when pointing at the car to lock/unlock it - Japanese specs a really short-range, I've been told, - you have to be literally next to your car for remote to operate. Naturally, the key required initialisation after I transferred the circuitry, but it only takes a minute or two.

Ebay key isn't useless.

You can swap the innards of your old broken key into the Ebay key. Bin the innards of the Ebay key as they are useless.

Then you have a new key.

Easy.
