Why do MB Dealers treat you like sh*t ?

Why do German dealers treat you like royalty?

Just back from Germany and Visited 3 dealerships + Brabus (BMW,MB,Audi) what a different experience it is over there to our useless dealers, the prospective buying experience was nothing short of brilliant and they could not have treat me better despite my awkward questions. I'll post the full report later as it wont be a 2 minute post but in short I test drove

  1. BMW 535d
  2. An Unknown (at the time) BMW
  3. New Audi A6
  4. E250 coupe
  5. E350 Saloon
  6. Brabus D4
  7. Brabus Tuned E350

And of course in Germany you can get the cars up to a very healthy top speed on the Autobahn which the dealers don't mind at all and some encourage.

I just need to do the maths as there is a currency conversion involved so will be seeking the help of any currency hedging experts / dealers as regards to Euro strengthening or not! as some of the cars are relatively long lead times.

So more later but I can 99% say my next motor will be coming from the Fatherland :thumb:

Every time I experience German service versus British (although the former would struggle to match Olly's customer service) I am embarrassed by the latter (except banks, where both are equally ****e).

Is it because we spend our lives so suffused with embarrassment at asking for good service that we tolerate such rubbish?

This doesn't just apply to cars either - - the service I've received in German shops, hotels, restuarants etc is way better then here... sad really... :(

I think MB Watford is my nearest one - how do they rate for servicing costs/attitudes?

P.S. Germans make rubbish sausages ;)

Now, I like to think of myself as a pretty genial cove (perhaps Ian and a few other MBClub members may think otherwise :o) and I have sidled through life trying to treat others as I would want them to treat me.

Recently, I re-entered the consumer market having bought a second home and am working my way through c£15k in the course of kitting it out:

Tradesmen for roof, oil c/h and new sash windows. John Lewis for some bedroom and living room furniture, M & S for soft furnishings, B & Q for an assortment of stuff bought on 10% off OAP Wednesdays... and today £2 in Barratts for a pair of heel grips for my shoes! Even John at AA Insurance Services was great, even if the bugger didn't reduce my premium.

I have been truly staggered throughout by the quality and efficiency of service and the friendly and good advice given by the dozen or so assorted folk with whom I have come into contact.

I really don't know if service is generally improving or perhaps these good people are just pitying a poor OAP - who is an expert at acting the daft laddie. ;)

But I do think that too often, service providers, whether individual salespeople or the corporate entity, make crass and baseless assumptions about a prospective client on the strength of appearances or their apparent or perceived wealth.

From my humble beginnings as a dustman to dining at the home of a prominent Scottish Law Lord, I've seen 'em come and go and crash and burn!

Do you make sausages?

Speaking as a keen amateur sausagemaker, I can safely say that German sausages are extremely good, and technically far more challenging than a good English banger. I like both.

Brattie and chips anyday of the week for me. Currievorst, Zemph - all on the same plate. Hope this is not a grammar and spelling thread!

Don't get me started on the spelling and grammar police, anybody that anally retentive can go and bash it up their own ar*e.

Some of the best engineers, lawyers and surgeons I have ever met could not spell correctly it it never did them any harm :p

Haha .. what have I started!? Well yes, they do make *good* sausages .. just not *nice* ones IMHO

As for sausages here, I order from Donald Russell when I can and they have GREAT sausages! But that's by the by .. sometimes, when you're stuck overnight in a horrid hotel having missed your connecting flight, you just want a full English in the morning to last you through and a selection of German/Austrian sausages just ain't what you're looking for!

German Test Drive Experiences

OK here goes, get the popcorn a long drink and relax here’s the story of how customer service should be done. However for the faint hearted I will warn you up front this story does have a scary ending!

Firstly buying a UK spec car in Germany is not a problem, well as long as you don’t want to drive it back and then it’s an administrative nightmare, so the easy procedure is order the car with 20% deposit, dealer calls when car due for delivery to them, transfer money (all excluding German VAT) head to Germany collect paperwork, car on trailer, head back to UK pay VAT, register car simples.

OK first stop:

BMW Munich

Expecting me and treat me like royalty fully explained the buying procedure and export procedure, knew all the answers to the questions and was really clued up on the marquee and also informed me he had a special car for me to drive? As well as the 535d, Drove the 535d and it behaved like every other one I have ever driven very competent and very well mannered. Got back and they gave me the keys to another unbadged 5 series and said they would like my opinion in direct comparison to the 535d. On pulling away the car pulled like a train and accelerated incredibly although the power delivery was a little brutal car had 8 speed auto box and paddle shift very nice better sharper handling than the 535d felt more agile, at this point I still did not have a clue what was powering this thing. Got back to the dealer and we both got out of the car after I had popped the bonnet, flipped the bonnet up and I could not believe my eyes I had been driving 520d !!!!!! I then asked Gregor the salesman to explain, the car had an M Sport E map (not available in UK) active damping suspension and M sport gearbox software. This took the car from 184 bhp to 254 bhp The best bit it is €12k cheaper than a 535d, now that’s worth thinking about!

Next Stop Audi test centre at Munich airport, here you can test every car Audi make, a little short on time so only tested the A6 3.0 TDi Nice car very well appointed in full Milano leather, new pop up information screen is a bit off putting and in line of sight which actually blocks your view on the LHD car, The car performed well suspension a bit more loose than the BMW but reasonable, power from the 3 litre lump very disappointing and ran out of steam well before the red line as much as I love our A8 the new A6 is not in its league nor in the league of the BMW’s it’s expensive and doesn’t cut the mustard as a prestige car it feels just like it’s pretending to be something it isn’t.

MB Mannheim

Firstly they explained all the export rules exactly as the BMW dealer in Munich did. First out E250 cdi Coupe in pearlescent white with black leather interior, nice drive very composed and solid headed out into the palatinates to get it on some twisties and then that’s when the disappointment started, chassis is not good for making progress and country roads seats hurting the ribs a little not really meant for well built people like me or (and I’ll say it before you think it Fat Bast*rds) got onto the Autobahn and it came back into its own very silent as it cut its way through a misty day very nice in a straight line good acceleration and pulled all the way to the red line back to the dealership for a swap into a E350 cdi 7g Tronic plus now whoever designed the seating and pedal layout in this car must have done it on a Friday afternoon after having a heavy pub lunch, eleventeen pints of weiss beer and schnapps chaser’s s it is nothing but a complete joke. The lowest I could get the seat still left me too high up requiring me to squint under the roof line to even try and see the road. Out on the same test run as the coupe but things were much worse the W212 chassis must have been designed by somebody used to making jelly or blancmange as it is seriously not up to the power of the engine leaving the car unstable at high speed on tight bends, twice I lost it and had to go into recovery mode, which gave the salesman chance to use the full vocabulary of German swear words, after a short apology we hit the autobahn where things were a little better but not by much, The gearbox is simply not for me and felt very at odds with the car sometimes not really being able to make up its mid what gear to be in. very disappointing all round and poor value for money.

Quick stop at Brabus on the way back

Brabus D4 nice car very agile and nimble well set up but after you get past the suspension upgrades, it’s all cosmetic the only power upgrade is a tuning box which lifts power to just over the 200 bhp mark, the car does look really well though and turns heads but it is a little small which for me is its main downside

E350 cdi tuned by Brabus, ex customers car now for sale has a lot of cosmetic mods and some power and suspension upgrades. 2 minutes in the car and it was as bad as the one I had driven in Mannheim did about 5 minutes before giving them it back telling them my reasons. My view is MB have got it wrong with the W212 big time.

OK so what’s the verdict? Well here is my league table.

1. BMW 535d
2. BMW 520d (with E map and Active damping)
3. Brabus D4
4. MB E250 cdi Coupe
5. Audi A6
6. Brabus Tuned MB E350 CDi
7. MB E350 CDi

So what am I going to buy? Well the jury is still out at the moment, The BMW’s certainly have it in the performance department however nothing feels as classy as an MB and they do feel more special than the BMW.

The main consideration is the currency gamble on € Vs £ the options are pay 20% now and the remainder on delivery which could be as long as 25 weeks or pay in full at the time of purchase at the prevailing exchange rate. Either way you have to deal with a long established dealer so you know your money is safe.

So after the first round it’s BMW 1 Mercedes Benz 0

I’ll update the thread as the story unfolds.

Thanks - an interesting read. Nothing beats a real run on proper roads including high speed, something you just can't do here. The BMW 520d sounds remarkable!

Tell me if I'm off the mark here, but when is an import a "grey import" and when it isn't, I thought any thing not supplied through an official UK dealer was grey? Does the "UK" spec motor through a German dealer not become grey then?

The 520d with the E map shocked me I would have never guessed it was four pot, TBH my first thoughts were it was a tuned 530d. It's certainly given me food for though with the 12k price difference over the 530d. Brabus reckon they could get me a E250 Cdi Coupe to 270 bhp which would work out at around 6k more expensive than the mapped 520d but would be a very special car :)

I don't think so as its first registration will be in the UK not Germany, but not an issue to me as the car will never see a UK dealer anyway :thumb:

It is a remarkable engine. Having had one of the first 330d BMWs, then the latest model 320d I couldn't tell the difference apart from the low speed noise. To get 270bhp out of a four pot oil burner is little short of astonishing!

I wonder if Alpina do similar things? The german motor scene is just so much more interesting!

So, what are the export rules, etc?

The simple procedure is in the second paragraph of the post, however if you want to collect the car in Germany and drive it away from the dealer then the car has to be registered in Germany so from that point on it is a German car not a UK Spec car delivered in Germany so you have to pay German VAT and then it gets very interesting in the UK as the car then becomes a re registration not a fist registration, doing it this way is very complex and I'll not go into it as you would soon get bored, but if anyone is thinking of doing this happy to pass on all the info I gained.

Do you not have to pay an "import tax" when you bring it in. Or are you exempt if you keep it for a year? How would insurance companies view an non UK spec car like the 4 pot BM which will prob never be released in UK.
