Winter weather driving.

I learnt this last winter in the old 230K; DONT gear down when trying to stop.

Seems so obvious now, but because its a normal driving habit i did it on ice and omg... :-)

Whereabouts in them thar hills??

If you change down this will induce a slide because the rear wheels could lock temporarily.

Sorry misleading username its just an anagram of my name , no irish connection for at least three generations . Thanks for explanation though .

I believe some automatics now blip the throttle on downshift to remove this problem. eg. Nissan GTR

In manuals it's possible to heal and toe when down shifting, but I doubt many people bother, me included.

True, if i rev-matched then it wouldn't be as big an issue, but i think if i did put it in a low enough gear it would lock the rear wheels still.

As you come off our development you have to go either up or down a steep hill. The hill has speed bumps with one right at the top, so if not gritted then up os impossible (thanks to 'calming' measures!), and as you go down on the sheet of ice that is the road, no matter how slow you are you are sent into a skid as you come off the speed bumps as they change your angle just enough to lose traction.

Almost went flying into the main road at the bottom the other day - had to put the car into a sideways skid to dig the tyres in and stop.

RE: i hate...

i hate rear wheel cars in winter weather.

i have to drive for work, and its a nightmare, twice i have got stuck in the last 3 weeks.

once i was on top of the hill and the ice made me lose control of the car and i slid haplessly all the way down to the bottom.

i tried for 2 hours to get up but i couldnt.

the thing that topped it off was a small scoda went flying up the hill, with no problem at all, and the old man was looking at me thinking stupid man, get a real car!!

crazy!!

RE; let me add

i should also add how i actually got out of the mess i was in, because i was amazed ... and people should bear it in mind if they didnt already know.

where i was stuck, and there were houses all down the side of the hill.

there were a number of families playing there and if it wasnt for the advice and help of one certain guy, i would have been screwed.

basically his brother (a hefty guy) sat in the back of the car and my friend (also hefty) at the front, me in the drivers seat of course. He then got his three kids and one of their friends to stand in the boot. He sat on the end of the boot edge, and bounced up and down has hard as he could.

i gently accelerated up the hill.

it worked!!

the bouncing caused the back wheels to get enough friction to move!

lesson - apply weight to the rear end of the car when stuck on ice/snow

On longer journey worth putting a blanket / food / flask in case you get caught out.

Would add a shovel to this list, especially for the Jockanese on here
