Evenin' all. Does anyone know where I can obtain a hard copy workshop manual for a 1998 V8-engined W210 (actually an E55); all I have found so far seem to cover only the fours and sixes.

Please help.

Doesn't exist afaik Your best bet would be to join the official MERCEDES-BENZ CLUB Official Mercedes-Benz Owners Club --membership includes access to the official Mercedes EPC/WIS online. Only down side is you have to wait about a month after joining to get access. Otherwise its illegal copies on CD/DVD to be found on EBAY

I bought from ebay but the discs didn't (fully) work, so I joined The Mercedes-Benz Club but have never had much success using (even navigating) WIS/EPC. :o WIS/EPC are worth the (IIRC £35) membership fee IF you can use them.

EBAY discs can have their problems- often because they were originally designed to be operated in a different software/hardware environment than a home PC. Because they are bootlegs they often come poorly documented and simply won't run as intended. There are workarounds most of the problems [ detailed on the net] but unless you are a computer tech??????? The WIS/EPC problems again stem from the fact its a poorly documented system for the uninitiated. People forget that Mercedes dealer personnel will in all likelihood get a full training course in its use at some point. Then there's the language barrier to overcome which is fine once you've cracked it but remains an annoyance to anyone who isn't German! Finally its a "cut down" system to restrict its use for commercial purposes. On aspect of this is the absence of any WIS information on the VITO and VIANO models although the EPC information is there. This is a current topic of complaint on the MERCEDES-BENZ CLUB forum at the moment. Personally I always find it works best if you input your own vehicle's full VIN code --otherwise it tends to come up with warnings. In a way I sympathise with this approach the system is not released free to the official club to pose a commercial threat to the official dealerships- I think its only meant to help individual members with their own cars. :dk:

That said its still the best thing available- sadly printed manuals are a thing of the past now.:(

Gentlemen, thank you very much. I'm used to this sort of thing with my Saab: EPC/WIS isn't awfully user-friendly, and Haynes is less than wonderful. I've ordered a CD - "works ONLY on XP" it says (yes, my computer is that old), so we'll see. If I cannot obtain a CD that works properly, I may well buy one of the Brooklands or Peter Russek books (anyone have any views on which is better?) for everything but the engine, and for engine info join the club when I need to.

Thank you once again.

Afaik the Peter Russek manuals are often translations from original German texts as are some of the BROOKLANDS manuals. Most Russek manuals concentrate on the mechanics like the engine and are poor on electricals/body etc . Another alternative is to take out a subscription to the ALLDATA site in the states-- they are often cited as valuable sources of Mercedes repair and service info---- don't know what that costs- but being US based will cover the v8 petrols.

I bought a WIS (no EPC) on DVD from the 'Bay - the seller asserts his right to sell the info - for £3.50 or so. I installed it today, and it works fine, but as Grober has alluded to, it's about as user-friendly as a barbed-wire toothbrush. I'll get the hang of it eventually...

I think I'll probably buy a Brooklands hard copy manual for general reference, and use the WIS for anything that is not properly covered therein.

In the meantime, could anyone tell me where the block coolant drain plug is to be found on the M113 engine? The coolant is blue; not a good colour for long life, and I know not when it was last changed.

QUOTE:- There is a drain fitting on the right side of the block. It looks like a male hose fitting. There is no external hex, just an internal hex for a hex socket. I have never gotten more than a few drops out of the block drain fitting after I drained the radiator through the drain plug, so I no longer try to use the block drain fitting.

It would appear nobody uses the block drain plug since draining via the radiator is judged perfectly adequate?
