Fella's,

2weeks ago a mate bought a 190E 2.5, J reg from a chap from Wales who drove it down on a trailer in his very nice ML,all the way to NW london.

I must say very nice nick, grey/black, left hooker dog leg gearbox and boy has it got some poke or what?! seriously quick.

Handling some what shocked the crap out of me not because it was crap... no way! The thing just sticks to the tarmac like glue, anyone who has come off the M25 junction to catch the M40 into London would know there is a very big bend that seems to go on for ages to join on. The Guys foot didnt leave the pedal once around that bend, in most cars you would have ended up in the barrier for sure w/o doubt.

anyway back to the issue just been out to see how he and the car are doing....

the car has developed a strange tick or more precisce a 'tuk' sound (every 3 seconds) when the car is idle.

2 possibilities:

The fuel Tank:

its comming from the rear RH side where the fuel tank is. if you put your hand on the tank and press your ear against it you can hear and feel the vibration of the tuk. I know there isnt a pump in the tank just a sender unit.

RH SLS system:

i say this as when the car is in motion the tuk sound becomes more gradual.

do you reckon it could be the SLS pump? and what we are hearing/feeling from the bottom corner of the tank is the vibration from the SLS shock?

a tricky one this but you guys know best!

The fuel pump is on the rear rhs, just in front of the rear wheel. Could it be this making the noise or perhaps something linked like a return valve or something? Fuel filter time maybe?

I know mine makes strange groaning noises from time to time from around the pump which I have to take a look at sometime. Runs alright but I suspect the filter and pump might be original.

There's two fuel pumps in the 2.5-16.

You could try switching the engine off for a few seconds whilst coasting to see if the noise vanishes?

As the SLS is purely hydraulic (radial pump driven from exhaust camshaft) it should still function even with the ignition (hence fuel pumps) switched off.

Will

The pumps are on the rear left hand side not right:)

The fuel tank is in the boot.

Broken or faulty drop link on the rear anti roll bar or broken/loose/ maladjusted arm on the SL height control valve causing oscillation in the self levelling system ?

They do shock many a driver of much newer performance cars. They aren't the most powerful performance cars around but the way they put the power down mixed with the truly fantastic handling means they can leave many a high performance car standing. Especially around the twisties

I miss mine so much:(

it really is strange, its like somthings just happily tuk, tuk'ing away, in the rear.

possibly..

somthing for sure that it is defo' an electric or hydraulic issue when there is power sent to what ever it is.
