Been to Manchester...
They checked the car and found the problem only on the boot lid.
It will get repainted...
They said it's around 5-6 weeks for it to be processed with Mercedes Germany.
After that they will book it in.
Was told that if i notice it elsewhere to let them know.
Did not ask much from me really...
I'm crossing my fingers that it's not going to spread on other parts.

I hate to say this, but from what I have read elsewhere, many people have said it doesn't spread, it just appears, as if it's not a matter of if, but when...

It seems as if you are in fact unlucky that it is not all over the car, as then you would likely be warranted the 'full' re-spray. I was told after inspection, that the inspector was not claiming the front arches on my car, as he did not see that they were effected, but the response that came from Germany / British Specialist, was that all metal panels would be sprayed. So maybe there is a chance :)

Apparently Germany are actually very quick at replying to the TIPS cases, the dealers just tell you that so that they do not have to say "we don't have the space, time or resources to do it anytime soon".

Its just strange that why the blistering is not happening in the same time?

I agree, I was weirdly fortunate that at least 70% of my metal body panels had the micro blistering, but they continually said throughout that they would only cover the areas effected, not the areas unaffected, then they went approved it all anyway...

I waited until mine was severe, like, every panel, and patches missing as big as the palm of your hand, then I took it.

I can't say I didn't exacerbate the problem with a pressure washer, because I'm a bit daft like that.. :thumb:

They tried the old "bumpers aren't part of the bodywork" but I reasoned that the same problem that they've accepted is a fault from the factory (the lacquer not bonding well) is present both on the bodywork and the bumpers. It's the same fault... They agreed and every part was redone, including replacing the sills entirely as apparently it would have been more expensive to repaint them. :dk:

MB just aint very good with paint are they..
Major rust issues in 2000s and now this

Yep...I have also found more mjcro blisters today on the rear quarter passenger side, passenger door, drivers side rear quarter not loads but a few specs so I'm going back to Manchester again on Monday.
Only thing is left is drivers door and bonnet...
What has happened with your front wings?

I'm starting to lean towards the idea of not even going anywhere until its covered left right and centre with blisters... might as well get it done in one go

Don't hold back with the pressure washer either. :thumb:

The clearer the issues in photos, the bigger the chance a full re-spray will be approved!

If you realise that this paint /laquer degeneration is catalysed by exposure to certain wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum found in sunlight--- hence its effect on a specific colour RED --you will realise some surfaces will be more exposed over time than others e.g. horizonal rather than vertical surfaces initially. Thus the effect is always potentially there it just manifests at different times. That's why I would always press for a full body respray. To that end it may be worth waiting till the problem is fairly widespread before approaching Mercedes. Offers to just spray either the bonnet/bootlid/ roof is just likely to muddy the waters if further work is required later.:dk:

Whilst i have not trolled though the whole tread here, my wifes 14 plate 8K miles SLK55 Opal red now has this problem, albeit in very early stages. Have been at local MB today with it, the service manager dreads seeing this colour!! he stated the amount of cars MB are currently dealing with on this issue, and to the many he is dealing with within his branch, it's horrendous, anyway, I need to decide weather to trade it out and move on or get the paint work fixed, subject to MB agreeing to take it on that is. Currently he tells me its a years waiting list with the back log and 4 weeks in the body shop when it gets there, all the metal body work only, wings, doors, boot and bonnet, all got to go back to primer, the bumpers and plastic trim apparently not effected. My first reaction is, I do not wish our car to be pulled apart for this work, it will never go back as was, then how will the colours match, very much doubt it will be perfect, so now looking for a high spec SLC43, which is a shame as the wifes car is a very good looking high speced car, but not sure either of us want the current car pulled to pieces, as it seems it may well be. will see the cost of a SLC43 and make a call on the expenditure against the re painting:(

I try not to be put off owning the car after it's been all apart and put back together...
However I do have had a previous bad experience with my previous C63 which after an accident it needed a new drivers door and front wing.
The paint finish was the same as factory with naked eyes but they did not align the door properly and did not programme the deadlock system as well.this ****** me off of course after waiting for the car to be done in 8 weeks.
I sold it not long after.
Had something else for a while and now I go another C63 in the crap red...if I would have been aware of the red paint issues I would have steered clear from it.
Now facing a possible full respray makes me worried how it will be put back together.

The last thing I heard about this issue is that MB have so many cases to deal with, they are changing the rectification process.

So far as I understand it, they have been removing and refitting the glass etc. with the car spending up to three weeks in the workshop. This is costing MB a fortune, so in future they will apparently be in situ masking off glass and other items items (like unaffected areas) that would have previously been removed/prepared. This will reduce some of the time and effort needed to sort the paint out, reducing costs and allowing them to deal with more cars.

All a bit of a mess to say the least IMHO. So relieved we got rid of our Fire Opal C204. Just hoping that Designo Hyacinth Metallic proves to be more durable.

Although not quite the same issue as here, I bought a Magma red CLK from MB Direct in Birmingham a few years ago and noticed there were rusts spots under the bonnet and few bubbles elsewhere - the car was only a couple of years old at that stage. This got picked up when I took it in for a service and MB arranged for it to be sorted at their paint shop in Solihull. Instead of patching it up - a problem with red again, they did a full respray and I effectively got a new looking car.

Hi I have just noticed my 2 year old Red C Class Coupe 220CDI AMG the paint on the boot lid has started to like pit up!
It looks like someone has got a pin and perforated the whole of the boot lid if you know what I mean.
Tried to take pictures but it doesn't show up, but run your finger or hand over the boot lid and it feels likes loads of pimples underneath!
Looking for some advice please?
Basically the best way to deal with this with Mercedes without going in all guns blazing because as you could guess I'm a bit ****** off by it!

Thanks!!!

Hello Riders. I have a 2012 C220 d AMG Sports Coupé in fire opal. I have this morning just picked my car up from the dealership having been away for about two weeks having a repaint under a Mercedes paint warranty claim. I have a panoramic sunroof so all of the other panels were repainted due to the problems described.

I believe that warranty claims are being treated individually on a case-by-case basis and Mercedes only agree to repaint the affected panels Eventhough Mercedes acknowledge that there is a paint problem with fire opal

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread on my first post! Of those who have had a respray carried out, has this resolved the issue with the paint, or has the problem come back?

D

Good to know. Looking at Fire Opal car at the moment, through a main dealer. Car is going for a full respray. How have they warrantied the respray on your vehicle?
