2007 CLK, 22.5k miles - discs & pads front & rear, bit of help please

for info, one of the indies broke down the cost for me - all net
front - discs £62.33, pads £36.16, sensor £16.92
rear - discs £57.99, pads £36.28, sensor £16.92
plus 2 hours labour £136

initially, it really does sound as if the service guy was trying to 'scare' me into booking it in for replacements all round now. disgraceful behaviour...but not surprising unfortunately :(

I think some garages rely on the "fear factor" when it comes to brakes.

A friend of mine has a 2005 Laguna which was taken to the local Renault franchise for some non-brake work and when he collected it and paid the bill he was advised that the front brake pads were 80% worn and was quoted £150 to replace them.

He bought some pads for £15 and brought the car to me to fit them. When I removed the old pads they were only 50% worn at most.

Three weeks later he was back at the Renault garage as the original problem had still not been cured. On collecting the car he was told that the mechanic who'd done the work recommended that the front pads needed to be changed as they were heavily worn !

Brakes are not something to take chances with but a second opinion is definitely a good idea as some "reputable" places seem to view them as a cash cow.

This is interesting!

Does this show a slot machined out of the edge? And so if the disc metal starts to erode back inside the slot then a hole appears and then that's the wear indicator precisely defining what's what?

Looks like a fair bit of wear is acceptable if that's how it works.

I've got these then on my W209?

Dave

I always thought this machining was there just to balance the disk.

Didnt know it was a wear indicator at all. I check minimum thickness with a micrometer.
