AMG Widebody 190

Just checked your gallery posting...

B*gg*r! If you're going to mess with my prejudices, I really need more notice. Yours is a great-looking car - superbly done and annoyingly well photographed (though getting a helicopter to do the birds-eye shots is a bit OTT ;)).

I sit corrected! :D

How does humble pie taste at this time in the morning:D .

I too dont normally like mercs in red (except convertible ones) but N/B's is the DB's!

The 4.3L M113 weighs 206kg which is the lightest V8 I think - M119 with ME-SFI is around 240kgs. The engine that's in it must weigh half of that surely?

You need to consider not just the engine, but the additional weight of the gearbox and differential (you can't start putting V8 torque through a baby 6-cyl diff).

Check the weight difference between a w126 420 SEL and a w126 300SEL and the difference is approx 200kg.

That's not all over the front end though is it? Some of that will be down to equipment as well?

The additional engine, gearbox and diff will distribute over the whole car, front and rear will drop with the drivetrain weight increase. It's not a see-saw.

Options differences will be immaterial, there is not much the 300SEL doesn't have compared to the 420SEL, if anything !

Did Strattons do many, if any at all, of these 190e widebody conversions for our roads, or were they exclusive only to other markets, ie japan, Germany, US..?....I ask as iv never seen one here .....

That was my point - it's immaterial really.

Not sure what figures you're looking at but the 300SEL is listed as 1710kgs and the 420SEL as 1695kgs?

Wouldn't bother with a M117 myself if you're going to all this trouble. An M119 is a tighter fit but how about an american lump if the M113 and it's gubbins is too expensive?

Yes...the kit i bought was from Germany, but a friend of mine has the same kit, all brand spanking new....he bought it from a chap in the UK who bought out Stratton's inventory when Stratton closed down.

Smart move buying that lot, i was only 17 years old back in 1991 when Ron sold up !

I'll post you up the technical data from the w126 manual later.

Whose fitting an m117 ? I'm fitting a V8 420 lump from a w126 !

M119 in a w201 - the physical fitment is slightly more troublesome due to the wider Vee and angled DOHC heads. However, unless you find the very rare CIS-KE m119, the pain will come from wiring up the LH system with it's 5 computers ! Fitting an M119 is a waste when you can fit a 5.6 M117 which is easy 1-day wiring job and only 26bhp less (but more torque than 5.0 m119). The 26bhp shortfall one can make up through high lift cams !

American lump is nice, but i like my cars pure MB / AMG / tuner etc.

Those figures came from the bastion of knowledge ME so I am not holding my breath on them being correct!

I thought the 420 in the SEL was an M117?

M119 190 right here if you're up for the challenge :D .

The 420 V8 is an M116, never an m117 !

Yep, seen that 190 thread. Not sure if it is LH, but good job !

Talbir, A CREDIT TO YOU

Nice one mate :)

If by 'LH' you meant Left-Hand-Drive, then the answer is no;

I suspect talbir is referring to the fuel injection system. LH was one of the many revisions of the Bosch Jetronic system.

It makes the engine swap much easier if the donor lump is running the same setup as the car

The M117 can be had to make absolute shed loads of power

What are the main differences between the M116 and M117?

It's a nice project, i'm not sold yet on the colour but you don't do a widebody to melt into the background after all.

Dave!

LHD is left-hand-drive, LH is reference to the fuel delivery system. Pre 91 M119s had CIS-KE systems, post had LH systems....far more complicated but delivering the same power.

The M116 is not materially different to an m117, Vee is less wide making easier physical fitment. Power of an engine is primarily made in the heads, so decent work there can result is material power gains.

What colour do you suggest ? I welcome thoughts on this, there is time yet before car enters bodyshop, so welcome everyone's view.

Colours not permissible (as i already have MBs in these colours) :

Black 040
Nautic blue
Smoke silver
Almandine red
Arctic White 147
Diamond Blue
Pearl Green

Fire away !
cheers

Talbir, I guess you should add that any colour suggestions would have to period to the car, considering what you've suggested in other posts ;)

So no modern shades!

You could go major retro, and have a brown or cream colour! Or a yellow, perhaps :D

Seriously, what about a period green/black or blue/black colour? Subtle, yet appealing :)
Then again, I've recently discovered signal red is pretty nice on a 190!

Darren

Talbir , i know it isn't a 'period' colour , but if you get time , pop down to MBWorld , on the top deck in the AMG section they have a CLS55 in Designo Mystic Red ....

An incredible colour ....

I think brown would actually look rather nice
