This thread could go on forever! Few I remember are B2 on a Rolls Phantom in Edinburgh(poss the Mayoral car). VAT 69 on a Rover 3 litre in West end,51 MON Merc in Manchester,AVE 1T Aston Martin in Manchester recently, SAA13 on a Saab owned by SAAB aerospace.Our local undertaker whos initials are JU has R1 PJU on his Merc!
B 2 is in private hands. I have it listed as belonging to guy in Bourne End, South Bucks (who is also one of the few people to have a plate that actually spells his surname), but it may have changed hands since then. Looks like it was last seen on an Audi TT. The Lord Provost of Edinburgh has
S 0, while
S 10 is reserved for the use of the Lady Provost.
VAT 69 (along with
VAT 68) famously belongs to Wm Sanderson & Son Ltd, distillers of VAT 69 whisky (and now part of Diageo). It's currently on an E-Class.
51 MON has been around since the 1950s, and is now on a Ferrari.
S1 MON, which is also on a Ferrari, was sold by the DVLA for £59,000 in 1999.
AVE 1T is a new one on me, but looks to have been an original 1978/79 issue, so it's good to know it's survived. Would make a good counterpart to
LOV 1T, which can often be seen in Mayfair.
Also didn't know that Saab had
SAA 13, but it also looks to be an original Hampshire issue (rather than having been released at auction). The DVLA have sold a few "Saab" plates, though, including
SAA 1B,
SAA 8B,
SAA 8S and
S448 AMW (which was probably a special request from a Saab-lover with those initials). A few garages have also had "Saab" plates (though I'm not sure how many of these are still operating):
SAA 8 was owned by Clevedon Garage in Bristol, as was
SAB 999;
SAA 18 was owned by T&B Garages in Wimbledon;
SAA 131 is owned by long-standing Saab dealership Haymill, based in Farnham Common.
SAA 800 is in private hands. A special mention goes to Aberdeen Saab dealer Adrian Smith, who has/had a large collection of "SAB" numbers, including
H12 SAB,
K900 SAB,
J1 SAB,
A11 SAB and all the _11 SAB plates from H through to M (plus a few others).
On the subject of 'RIP' plates, the last FX4 taxi produced is in the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu - registered
R1 PFX.
