Beware - Watch out for this one!!

I do not disagree with the prevention of people using mobile phones whilst driving, i think it is utter stupidity and sometimes wreckless for people to do so. Police are coming down on it so hard because it is Dangerous. It is difficult to concentrate on avoiding the muppets that are already on the road without phones nevermind them having one hand stuck to their ear in a hand-head-phone sandwich.

This has become one of my pet hates. Added to this is Smoking while driving. I dont smoke for starters, but in order to smoke you have to...

-reach for the cigarette
-open the packet and remove one
-reach for a lighter
-put cigarette in mouth and then light with lighter
-then remove cigarette from mouth everytime you want to flick the ash (while making strange faces to stop smoke getting in your eyes)
-then, what most do....throw a glowing but out the window.

Why hasnt this been banned?
Why dont smokers get chased down the street with blues and twos and get fined, huh?

enough of that rant, time for a smile.

Smokers go through this routine so regularly, they can do this blindfolded with one hand tied behind their back.

Smokers are most distracted when they haven't had a cigarette - that's when you need to be careful of them.

surely there must be some coppers reading this forum?
Why dont you guys (at least try to) explain to us the actions of your colleagues'. Or or guys a little bit shamed given the bashing on thsi thread? ;-)

Sort yourself out - honestly!

I am tired telling my eldest daughter about "pleas and thank you" - yet this is only a new thing learned fom school friends whose parents perhaps don't share my concerns for good manners.

We were taught to say please not beg for things......................lol

How can anyone comment on a specific thread unless we hear BOTH sides of any event?

If they were to come along and give their version of events would it help, or would it imediately cause a divide? I like the way we offer sympathy to our members and criticise those that offend them. Why complicate this? :)

Yes, as you say, laugh out loud.

The Apostrophe Protection Society was started in 2001 by John Richards, now its Chairman, with the specific aim of preserving the correct use of this currently much abused punctuation mark in all forms of text written in the English language.
The rules concerning the use of Apostrophes in written English are very simple:

1. They are used to denote a missing letter or letters, for example:

apostrophe01s.gif
I can't instead of I cannot
apostrophe01s.gif
I don't instead of I do not
apostrophe01s.gif
it's instead of it is
2. They are used to denote possession, for example:

apostrophe01s.gif
the dog's bone
apostrophe01s.gif
the company's logo
apostrophe01s.gif
Jones's bakery (but Joneses' bakery if owned by more than one Jones)
... but please note that the possessive form of it does not take an apostrophe any more than ours, yours or hers do

apostrophe01s.gif
the bone is in its mouth
... however, if there are two or more dogs, companies or Joneses in our example, the apostrophe comes after the 's':

apostrophe01s.gif
the dogs' bones
apostrophe01s.gif
the companies' logos
apostrophe01s.gif
Joneses' bakeries
3. Apostrophes are NEVER ever used to denote plurals! Common examples of such abuse (all seen in real life!) are:

apostrophe01s.gif
Banana's for sale which of course should read Bananas for sale
apostrophe01s.gif
Menu's printed to order which should read Menus printed to order
apostrophe01s.gif
MOT's at this garage which should read MOTs at this garage
apostrophe01s.gif
1000's of bargains here! which should read 1000s of bargains here!
apostrophe01s.gif
New CD's just in! which should read New CDs just in!
apostrophe01s.gif
Buy your Xmas tree's here! which should read Buy your Xmas trees here!
Note: Special care must be taken over the use of your and you're as they sound the same but are used quite differently:
your is possessive as in this is your pen
you're is short for you are as in you're coming over to my house

exactly my point - bring on the OFFICAL police response, :)

To be fair, few montsh ago, I was caught by two poilce officers for being on the phone in a traffic jam. They were in a A-Team like van behind me for over 20 mins and the traffic was dead still so hardly moved at all. They finally pulled me over and 'had a talk'. Explained that I dont use my phone while driving but the car was at a stand still and I was simply calling to explain I'm running late for a wedding and I got into an argument with my friend at the end for being late...he (understandly) explained that this was still dangerous and the conversation lasted over 10 mins. decided not to give me points but record my name such that if i get caught again then i'll get 6 points instaed of 3, which I think is fair and I was lucky to keep my license clean!

So common sense did prevail on thsi occassion! :bannana:

Wow, you can even get a suspended sentence by the side of the road now.

Very worthy of you - did this police van have a window on the side and a big sign saying "Mr Whippy" ?

hehe - nope, plain black van. fyi for anyone who drives on the Holloway Road.

How on earth do you intend getting these individuals to join this debate? It is silly to ask any police officer their opinion because they were not there. The two police officers that were there would probably be sacked if they discussed this case (please do not think I am saying they are in the wrong). I am suggesting that If they were to discuss it then would they be contravening any police discipline codes of conduct?

Take your post for example, An A-Team like van!! :) You know what you mean, but I fear you might have slightly exaggarated the description? :)

I have no idea if this is the genuine article but are you seriously suggesting you were stopped by police officers cruising our highways and bye-ways in a similar type machine?

van-2.jpg

I'm sure you were exaggarating and perhaps they were in a more conventional police vehicle so should we believe whatever is said on the Internet?

15 all there Fred............ :D but it still read correctly....

I 'fear' that is leading to another debate - whether my description of the vehicle is correct or not! ;) ok, so to clarify, it was a black van (obviously not a regular police van), the officers were in uniform, cool?

Regarding whether officers should speak up (not nececcarily the two officers in discussion), I dont see why not. They should be able to tell us what officers (in general) should do in these situations, what our and their rights are, and any other information that may bring us all on the same page, etc.

TBH I completely lost the point of this thread a good long time ago, I'm sure it started with verbal advice due to a mistaken impression of someone being on the dog and bone. When it reached child abduction I got confused.

You will notice from my other posts on here that I will never necessarily defend the actions of other officers since I was not there. I will, however, always try to put their actions into context, or explain why decisions MAY have been made.

I'm not in the habit of mindlessly defending someone simply because they share the same office as I do- Mistakes ARE made, and often more serious than this one. Such is life.

I'm not immune either from the occasional policing faux-pas :p

But you do use very good punctuation - I've never seen a dropped apostrophe or a misused comma. Important in modern policing I would have thought.
