Billy's W124 Coupe Project

From your pictures it looked like the failure may have been more to do with the diff unit twisting itself out of the subframe, I think the axle failure may have come as a result of that??

That's what i was thinking but :dk:, doesn't matter now. Its full steam ahead with getting her back on road.

Missed driving it this weekend actually!

It may be important to upgrade the diffmounts Billy now that you seem to have a cracking motor, excuse the pun....:):)

Have a think about it anyway, if you are not going to do any skiddies then it may be ok....??

Re painting if they are carbon steel [as opposed to stainless which I don't think they are??] you want a zinc rich, deep etch primer on the metal I'd say. Don't know the local trade names in the UK??

yeah i think you are right. i was thinking on the same lines.

I'll get in touch with the chap that's supplying me poly bushes for the rear links, the subframe and the front control arms. They are 83A shoreness, just slightly stiffer than W124 Sportline spec. Ordered also are adjustable camber arms.

No skiddies after the car's done but seeing as i'm going all poly might as well ask about the diff mounts now.

Interesting that Billy. Have you any more info on shore values from your supplier as I'm going down the ploy route in the new year on the 2.5-16.

Did the diff bend any subframe metal when it twisted or was it just twisting the rubber mounts do you think, you may need to upgrade the metal retaining parts as well as the bushes, put in a reinforcing plate or some such thing...??

9" Camber arms from Speedway Motors in the US Billy, they have rubber end connections as opposed to the rose jointed ones.

Mazza put me in touch with this chap and knows his stuff. I went with what was recommended really in terms of poly stiffness. I didn't want really stiff bushes.

Some say the use of poly bushes makes the car twitchy and some say it's the best thing they've done to their motor. I'm confident from advice received that these will make a massive overall improvement in drive.

PM sent John.

Was hoping to receive the bushes today, instead i get another customs letter through the post  Got stung quite badly on the shafts but is to be expected i guess :dk:

The refurbed differential is on its way in the post too. Hopefully i dont get feked for that as well. I shouldn't do as its coming from Germany.

Today l also put in a big order for all the bits i need from MB. I think i was offered a decent enough discount considering the quantity of items ordered. This is going to be one hell of a nut and bolt resto - and our man WG M-B is commissioned to do the work.

Front to back or back to front which ever way you see it, the 124 is getting sorted Billy stylee!

...yeh Terry thinks I'm bonkers too. But he's more than up for it. :bannana:

Does the company you got the poly bush kit from , do bushes
For other Merc models as well ?.
I have a w210 , it's been lowered quite a bit , and I'm wanting
to replace all the rear suspension parts as and when .
Don't know if to go standard or poly !!!

W210 shares many the suspension bushings with W124 so the rear control arm bushings are the same as what you see above. The front control arm bushings shares the same as W202 part number and I have them too.

Thank you so much for mazza and Billy for having a nice talk for the cars.

Thanks

Ake
