Billy's W124 Coupe Project

The connections to the control module for the memory seats are different and so i needed to swap out both back and head rest motors so they can plug in correctly.

Gotta love this for detail, you cannot go wrong!

Just two bolts holding the motors back rest motor on

The headrest motor is held in by two screws on the bracket

I had to also swap out the headrest rod to the rail as they are different for memory seats, purely as the motors are different.

Making sure the wires are fed back as they originally were, this was a little bit fiddly as the trim piece is hidden from view behind the tilt hinges.

Two torx 45 bolts to tighten the seat to the base, and the same on the other side, feed the seatbelt wiring through the hole and push it through the bottom of the seat.

...And as if by magic you have a memory seat! Notice how i havn't mentioned anything about the heated seats. This is because the wiring in both versions are exactly the same which is a bonus and there is nothig to do.

The seat is ready to test tomorrow so fingers crossed. If all goes well, i'll install the remaining trim pieces on the sides and put the back rest on and this seat is good to store away for the install later on.

....all thats left to do is the driver side! :bannana:

Looks good Billy, in the first pic is the memory module in the right place, I always thought they should be at the front of the frame to allow the car loom to plug in...??

And that green looking fibre cushion in the backrest, is that a new one...?

Yes, the module is in the right place, the seat base is all the way forward and the other is in between.

I had issues with removing two screws on the underside so i had to make sure i could access it by moving the seat far forward as possible (in the car). The none memory seat was a torx so could use one of those 'allen key' type bits.

The Green fibre backrest came off the memory seat not new. Its 20 years old! The normal leccy seat had really good unmarked leather and so that's the reason i needed to swap.

Good news, wired the seat back up in the car to test and can report all movements work brilliantly. :thumb:

The simple directive: Strip > Inspect > How bad? (or how little) > Either case lets give it the treatment > Follow this method throughout the underbody. :thumb:

Some more pictures of progress taken today. She's comming along nicely. All the waxoyling has been finished and almost ready to be pieced back together.

There has been a couple of surprises by the way of corrosion i.e. 'water traps' that i wasn't expecting but you just never know untill you really go looking for it - this was mainly a couple of areas around the top and sides of the inner wheel arches and some minor bits here and there. All of which was revealed by poking and prodding around the whole underbody looking for rust. Jay and Terry have done a fab job sorting it all out welding new metal in places where necassary. Subframe mounting arears were solid i'm glad to report and I am very pleased with their efforts as it can be a PIA when you find corrosion especially when you aren't expecting it!

Going to show it Bill...?

Are you going to put the car in a show, it's clean enough and you'd have a good chance at winning something I'd have thought.....

Ah I see!

... No plans to do so if I'm honest W.

This car is going to be incredible when its finished. Probably one of the finest 124 coupes in the country.
Once the paintwork is done its going to look stunning

Just read this thread from start to finish as Im about to do something similar to a saloon and was looking for a few pointers. I did a resto mod a few years back on a VW Syncro and used poly bushes wherever I could and now a few years on I regret it. Things have started to break as the bushes were too stiff and with the constant use the forces found another way to manifest themselves. I've had drop links break, roll bar mounts crack and even the steering rack mounting panel has started to split.

Poly bushing is something I wont be doing on my w124 but I am looking at R129 parts to get a better compromise

Bear in mind you are not comparing like with like, a VW Syncro and a W124 are completely different animals design wise. Personally, if I was doing a W124 I'd opt for poly bushes (probably with grease nipples) on the front lower wishbones at a minimum.

What about burnouts, doughnuts?
