Billy's W124 Coupe Project

Thanks for an interesting thread. Can you please tell me more about the stainless headers, where they a standard Mercedes part or after market?

they are standard on 320 engines (104)

As Kth says, they are standard M104 manifolds.

This engine originally had cast iron manifolds (found in early M104's) and so I replaced them with these ones.

The cast iron ones look quite ugly. If you check pics of the engine a few pages back you'll see they corrode quite badly.

In addition, fitting these stainless steel ones means i can ditch the metal cover that once covered the cast manifolds.

Apart from looks is there any performace gains, Cast vs. Stanless steel?

In my case possibly not as both seemed to be shaped the same, although cast is much stronger and holds heat better, stainless steel is for good looks whilst still doing its intended job....

...I mean look at it all cleaned up with new studs and bolts!

You could do with mirrored undertrays to reflect all that back. And yes I am serious. Its going to be a shame to put oily stuff in there.

:thumb: I'm looking forward to maintaining the engine keeping it clean! Is that sad!?

Lots of effort has been put in and will keep on top of it for sure.

I intend to drive the car as i did previously and enjoy it that much more. Its very easy once you do tons of work to a motor that you dont drive the Fekin thing!:fail

By the way John, look what turned up this morning.... Saw one on US ebay for the same price it would have cost me for re-trimming the palmino one i have. This one is in spanking condition.

Looks nice Billy, I have a feeling SS manifolds were used on cars that had cats and CI ones were used on cars that didn't - possibly on account of the fact that SS does not conduct heat very well compared to CI, meaning the cat warms up faster.

I've two very late model cars, 500 chassis numbers apart, one with one without....??

Interesting point W, seems plausible indeed, however this 93 K reg M104 had a CAT!

Out of interest, what kinda money would the palamino be worth?????

That is one smart looking armrest Billy. I still have my black one but no car to put it in... yet.

Well its surplus to requirements now, so wont be needed anymore....

If you search on US ebay there are arm rests going that would give you an indication on price. Most are past their best on there.

Good condition ones pop up now and again and will fetch $$$

just took these pics of the Palomino rest..

You can see what my intended uses are other than an OEM phone!

Not sure I could fit a fish supper in there!
Am sure it would look good twixt the seats in my car tho,,,
Cue the auto trader ad for my s203,,,...

I've heard that ss headers flow slightly better as they're smoother inside than cast iron.

Steering box dilemma

Houston we have a problem, whats wrong here?

DSC02022_zpse334a1bf.jpg

So for the time being I have given the old steering box a clean up, and painted it with black enamel engine paint.

What do you think i should do guys, I could move it on and look for a RH box, or seek help from a specialist.

I'm thinking that it maybe possible to swap all the internals from the LH box to the right hand box casing......

Youve come this far, why spoil it now? look for a RH one, it may turn up sometime this decade! lol

I'd be off to see a Hydraulics/Steering expert with specific experience with these Billy, it is just remotely possible that the internals could be swapped..??

Does the parts system show internal parts for these, match part numbers etc etc...??

Billy

Have you tried '3-pointed Parts' for a UK sportline box ?

There are plenty of sportline chassis 124's being broken - not just standard vehicles.
