C350e owners club

As I have points I'm a very cautious driver and it's pretty much motorway at 70-75mph for the majority of my miles. Just had a service at 27,000 and there's still about 4-5mm left on the ORIGINAL Hankkok tyres! Had the car since May and my old C250 coupe used to burn through the continentals even with the same driving style. Wow.

Damn you've beaten me. I've done 21,321 and they down to 2.5-3mm. I will change them at 22-23K miles.

Apropos of not much really...but, had a Rolec Chargepoint installed on Monday - all good. Much more convenient with the tethered cable than it is messing with the wall-wart supplied with the car. Faster charging too of course, FWIW. That said, I might revert to a lower rate of charging to give all the systems an easier life.

Took the car in today to have a rattle at idle examined. Of course, it didn't do it when I got there.... This isn't the 'normal' noise this engine makes, you know, the one that makes you think you bought a reasonably quiet diesel powered car by mistake, this was a full-on bag of spanners in a tumble dryer type racket that sounded like a metallic cover resonating as the engine hit 1200 rpm. I had an old Jeep Cherokee that sounded much the same - the core of the CAT had come loose inside the casing. Anyhoo, while it was going in, I asked if my car needed the charging socket and cable replacing and apparently not, it was sorted in production. August 2016 build I think.

Car is going back on Monday so they can keep it overnight and see if it will oblige with the noise when its cold.

Good service so far. Have to say, I certainly got the feeling you get when you book a doctors appointment then feel fine by the time you get there. I think I'll fire the car up tomorrow morning while its nice and cold and see if it'll oblige. I'll record it if it does.

I've been doing my driving in Sport or Sport+ to put some miles on the ICE. I prefer Sport+ on the whole, mostly due to the gearbox holding a lower gear I think. Some of the low speed light throttle gear shifts seem less than perfect at times though, oddly, they seem slightly worse in Comfort mode. I am being picky here though.

Overall, happy/10.

@paulhx - could you perhaps get a Type 2 extension cable? I haven't looked, but maybe the Type 2 charge cable that came with the car would work? If I remember I'll have look tomorrow.

I only have the one car that needs to charge (so far!) but I'm fortunate in having a reasonably long drive so could place the charger at a position where it'll reach the car with the 5m cable whether it's parked at the front or back of the queue.

Hi all

First post and would like to thank you guys for all your input , Now a week after delivery i have now set up all the many whistles and bells thanks to this thread. Interesting though that my lease company wont allow me to use the mercedes me connect services which i blatantly ignored and contacted mercedes direct which they set up for me hassle free, to sum up after a week very happy ,consumption at this time of year very poor but after reading through this thread not surprised 35mpg with 8 miles Electric , mind you Pre Climate is EPIC and may explain low mpg. Coming from a 320d i did expect more performance it just doesn't feel 270odd BHP fast and kinda miss the 80-120 pull that the bmw diesel had,but overall loving it , also charge point being installed at work so that will make things easier. one quick question is i see on you tube that you can have the media programmed so you can watch DVDs on the move and was wondering if anyone has giving this a go.

Again many thanks for all your help .

Sending addresses to car via Mercedes.me

Hi all, I am new here. Have had a c350e for two months now. It's a sports premium with options such as driving assist.

My question today is about the Mercedes.me app: has anyone successfully sent addresses entered on the Mercedes.me mobile app to the car? When I enter an address and then do a "send to car" it gives me an error saying it could not be sent. Everything else works! Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi

Yes it works but not great as once sent to car you have to connect the car to the internet via your phone, go into apps and download the destination. In that time you can have entered or spoken to it to set the destination. The BMW iDrive is far more slick on this feature. I normally just speak to mine as find works very well

hope that helps

I've no evidence to support the idea but it wouldn't surprise me if the ECU is set to limit performance for the first few miles. This was very evident on the Alfa Giulietta, along with poor economy until after they had doen about 1500 miles, at which point things improved significantly.

DVD on the move....doesn't sound like a great idea to me if the driver can see it, its bound to be distracting. The Range Rover solution to that is excellent i think.

Driving up to 120mph?.... watching DVD's while driving?.......

My Honda used to play DVD's but had a switch when you released the handbrake that cut the video feed, also had a video/audio in so you could play DVD's on the kids players in the back and have it come out the speakers, but again, the video was cut on the head unit when driving....which is fair enough!

Have you enabled the internet hotspot on the car?

Why on earth would you want to watch dvds on the move? Research the in cab footage of the guy who was looking at the screen of his phone as he killed a woman and her kids last year...:fail

80-120 pull? Presumably on a public road in the U.K.?

Can the mods pass this guy's details on?

C350e total loss of power

Hi all

I took delivery of my c350e in April this year.

At about 1700 miles an error message appeared saying "Only Emode available, power limited, refuel immediately. The car had almost half a tank of fuel remaining (petrol). The car then suffered a total loss of power, which was quite scary. It went to the dealers, they did a load of checks, drained the fuel tank, checked sensors etc.

It has now happened again at 4700 miles. The car had been at the dealers for the last 3 weeks and surprise surprise they cannot find a fault.

Has anybody else suffered anything similar?

Hello all,

Just joined as a new owner, so much great information in this forum, I've learned so much, thanks to all of you who post.

But ... has anybody else had this power loss problem or did you get a fix, Ant4479? Had my 10k miles used 350e for 2 days from MB main dealer and this exact thing happened to me. Reached the end of the charge, full tank of petrol, and got the 'only e-mode, refuel immediately' message followed by every single light on the speedo and rev counter coming on together with a total loss of engine power.

Coasted to a halt, turned it off, turned it on again and it was fine and has been since.

Other than that I'm loving the car but my confidence in it has taken a dent and the dealer hasn't returned my calls yet ...

Any ideas or suggestions other than return it?

Thanks!

Well I have had the car a month now driven to Scotland, on long journeys appear on the screen as 39.2 mph.
Still not sure on re charging on the go helps bring me more mpg or not tbh?
Drive sensible in hybrid appears to charge too any comments to try to improve.
Very comfortable no back ache after a 365mile run - love the car

IMO, the charging is too slow to justify doing it away from the house on a regular basis. When the electric highway chargers were free, I used one. I got roughly miles of range in an hour, which is OK, but not worth making a detour or extending a stop. I would use a destination charger if I was visiting a shopping centre or a tourist attraction, but I'm not sure the process of ordering and cost of the multiple membership cards you seem to need would justify the benefit.

Hybrid tends to keep the battery in the 10-20% range once you've burned through the first 80%. With sat nav set, it can go higher to keep electricity for urban sections later in the journey and it seems pessimistic about how much battery you'll need. I switch to e mode a mile or two from home to squeeze out the last few electrons.

Just got the car back from the dealers investigation of the 'sounds like a bag of spanners' issue it had. Apparently it's a known issue with the wastegate chattering that manifests only under specific conditions....that i happened to be able to hit more than once. They applied a software fix and reckon that did it. This, as well as the gearbox firmware updqtes we hear talk about, and the questions above re loss of power all speak to a common issue i think. Too much bloody software in modern cars.

They loaned me a new A200D AMG line while mine was in. If i was 20 years younger and it had another 200bhp I reckon I'd like it. Nice enough, but I was glad to get back into the C350e as it suits me much better.

Do you mean using the engine to charge the battery? No, it doesn't help mpg. Best thing is to try and lift and coast as much as you can to recharge that way.

The economy thing is interesting. The car goes pretty well if you use the loud pedal, but of course, that tends to do bad things to the MPG. If you want to, you can hypermile it and get pretty good results. I confess I'm finding myself somewhat obsessed with the MPG meter at the moment....I really need to get over that I think, as the car is already giving twice the MPG I used to typically get out of what it replaced, and I didn't buy it so it would be economical on every trip, just the short ones we tend to do a lot of, where there is little to be had by way of driving pleasure other than wafting along in comfort. It'll do those mostly on battery from our initial tests giving MPG figures of well over 200. So far I've only played with COMFORT and SPORT/+ for any distance. Did try CHARGE just to see how it felt - didn't care for it but I understand what it's for. Must try ECO one day.....

At the moment, I tend to go everywhere in SPORT and we aren't charging it in order to put some miles on the ICE to get it run in. If left to its own devices in COMFORT and if we carried on charging it at home, it would take forever to get 1500 miles on the ICE given our typical use. TBH, we'd be better with a pure EV but I wanted something 'nice' and couldn't stretch to a Tesla. None of the other offerings on the market appealed.

As CC says, best way to get best MPG is go easy, fill up that green meter! and I'd add make best use of charging it up at every opportunity. Sadly, given it won't fast-charge, that's probably of limited use when out & about. Using CHARGE mode is the least economical option as you are using petrol to drive the car along as well as charge the battery. Makes it work pretty hard.

350e update

It is really interesting to read so many posts.
I agree and disagree with views on an almost equal proportion.
I am comparing the 350e with my previous cars. In date order: Rx8, Evo x, C350 diesel, Audi A4 3.0 diesel Quattro. I have also had the unfortunate need to have two temporary cars just before getting the Merc; BMW 520diesel, BMW 330 diesel.
Of course each car has good and bad aspects (apart from the BMW's which were the worst and least reliable cars I have ever had dealings with).
My C350e has now done 28k miles without problem.
Good:-
  • power (faster in all conditions than any of the big diesels and in a different league to the BMW 520)
  • comfort (great cruiser - much more comfortable than the Audi or the BMW's)
  • tax efficiency (it is a company car so a 'no brainer')
  • Mercedes me and particularly the pre-entry climate control
  • Looks (the styling had to grow on me but now I love it. The 18inch wheels get lots of complimentary comments. I selected the light grey interior in a dark blue car and everyone says that it looks great)
Average:-
  • Fuel economy (It is more or less exactly what I expected. With an overnight charge most days the trip computer says that it is averaging 42mpg, this is about the same as the Audi and much better than the BMW 330. It is massively better than the Rx8 and the Evo x which both used to do less than 25mpg :D)
  • Handling/road holding (with new tyres there is not much to complain about but as soon as the tyres wear the power/torque combination results in the car coming out of every roundabout sideways!)
  • Noise at speed (Don't get me wrong, this is a seriously quiet car with very little engine or road noise noticeable under most conditions. It really is a very fast car but the turbo engine doesn't make a 'nice' noise when releasing all of that speed)
Bad/annoying:-
  • Tyre wear (around 9000 miles per set of rears and 15000 miles for the fronts is worse than I expected)
  • Foot rest (I only wear size 10's but the toes on my left foot hit the under-dash when using the foot rest. This does sometimes mean that during very long journeys I am fidgeting my left foot trying to stay comfortable)
  • Fuel tank capacity (I guess trying to accommodate the batteries and still leave some room in the boot meant that they compromised on the size of the fuel tank. However, this does limit how many miles you can do between refills. Still many times better than the Evo x in which you had to plan journeys by available petrol stations!)
In summary, I would recommend the 350e to anyone that wants a fast comfortable car (especially if you run it as a company car). The Hybrid feature really makes sense if you do short journeys and have a charge point available at each end (for two weeks I had to travel 20miles each way
to an office that had a free charge point. The trip computer was showing an average of 89mpg). If I had to change cars today I think I would order another C350e.

Re Dodgy
Comments
Well today I had to do a 300 mile trip motorways and a roads to Manchester and back
Due to wood head pass accident had to do a detour over the Snake pass to Sheffield had to use the sport+mode on this road HIGHLY RECOMMENDED .
Now I realize how much fun this car really is without the wife in it! Brilliant and fun round the bends.
Averaged 45.3 mpg.
Realize now that charge button is a waste of time it just screws the MPG up!

That's weird I'm on Hankooks and have done 22K on rears 3MM left and 5MM left on fronts. Someone else has even beaten me with i think 26K on rears. I'm on 17s.

I agree with the fuel tank as the same model C200d AMG manual was much larger.
